CNN news anchor Chris Cuomo took to Twitter to apologize for a profanity-filled outburst that was caught on tape regarding a heckler calling him “Fredo,’ the weakest brother of the Corleone family from “The Godfather’ and “The Godfather: Part II.’
And at least two sportsbooks are offering odds on what kind of blowback, if any, Cuomo will get from his bosses at CNN.
“Appreciate all the support but – truth is I should be better than the guys baiting me,” he tweeted Tuesday. “This happens all the time these days. Often in front of my family. But there is a lesson: no need to add to the ugliness; I should be better than what I oppose.”
On the now very viral video, the cable broadcaster threatens to harm a man who he says called him “Fredo,’ which Cuomo said is a slur for Italians. The initial “insult’ is not on the video, just the aftermath.
“I’ll f**king throw you down these stairs like a f**ing punk,” Cuomo can be heard telling the man. “It’s like the N-word for us. Is that a cool f**king thing?”
The man who made the remark said he thought his name was Fredo which caused the encounter to escalate.
A CNN spokesperson said the cable news network stood by the evening anchor of “Cuomo Prime Time’ saying: “Chris Cuomo defended himself when he was verbally attacked with the use of an ethnic slur in an orchestrated setup. … We completely support him.”
Fox News host Sean Hannity and former White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci backed the CNN anchor with Scaramucci agreeing it is “quite racist.’
Others on Twitter, many who said they were Italian-Americans, downplayed the offensiveness of “Fredo’ especially when compared to other slurs.
“It’s a MOVIE reference. Stop comparing it to the N-word’ say one tweet.
President Trump weighed in as well: “Chris was Fredo also. … The truth hurts. Totally lost it! Low ratings @CNN”
American Studies Professor Michael Mark Cohen, speaking with USAToday, explains that “Fredo was an untrusted and untrustworthy son who, after being patronized and ‘passed over’ by his powerful family, came to betray his brother out of stupidity and ego. So yes, that’s a custom made, deep cut kind of insult for someone like Chris Cuomo. And evidently it cut to the quick.”
