The blistering summer conditions in Alberta's capital pales in comparison to the Edmonton Oilers' on-ice sizzle, as Kris Knoblauch has his team as the 2024-25 Stanley Cup odds favorites to do one better than last season and lift the Holy Grail for the first time since 1990.

The team the Oilers fell to in the Stanley Cup Final is in hot pursuit, as the defending champion Florida Panthers have the second-shortest odds, according to our best NHL betting sites.

If the Panthers' one-ice product in the forthcoming campaign matches their Stanley Cup odds, they'll advance to the Stanley Cup Final for a third successive season. That would match the accomplishments of their state rivals.

The Tampa Bay Lightning won back-to-back Stanley Cups and made it to the final in three straight seasons from 2020-22.

With the NHL draft in the rearview mirror and free agency churning, we've shifted our attention to our 2025 Stanley Cup predictions.

Stanley Cup favorites

Oilers (+850)

Any team with Connor McDavid in his prime will be in this conversation long term, like Sidney Crosby's Pittsburgh Penguins used to be.

Edmonton drove the Stanley Cup Final to seven games after falling behind 3-0, but it was unable to finish the ultimate comeback and close out the series. We've seen in years past (including in 2023-24) that sometimes the experience of losing the Stanley Cup Final motivates teams to return and win the next year.

On the opening day of free agency, the Oilers signed 12 players, notably securing returnees Mattias Janmark and Adam Henrique, and adding veteran forward Jeff Skinner.

Ken Holland is no longer the Oilers' general manager. And while the decision on the next general manager hasn't been made, the Oilers lost Vincent Desharnais to the Vancouver Canucks, Sam Carrick to the New York Rangers, and Warren Foegele to the Los Angeles Kings.

They brought in Viktor Arvidsson from the Kings and traded Ryan McLeod and Tyler Tullio for Matthew Savoie. The Oilers also acquired Roby Jarventie from the Ottawa Senators as well as Ottawa's fourth-round selection in the 2025 NHL Draft in exchange for forwards Xavier Bourgault and Jake Chiasson.

Panthers (+1000)

After capturing the first Stanley Cup in franchise history, the odds favor the Panthers to repeat as champions. First, they'd need to make a third straight trip to the Stanley Cup Final, which is a task in and of itself.

The Panthers will have the bulk of their core returning, although a couple of key pieces on the blue line are headed out of town. While they re-signed Dmitry Kulikov, they lost Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Brandon Montour.

The Panthers will also be without Vladimir Tarasenko, Anthony Stolarz, Ryan Lomberg, Kevin Stenlund, and Casey Fitzgerald, all of whom left for pastures anew.

That said, the Panthers' leadership group will remain mostly intact, providing an excellent opportunity for the Cats to return to the promised land.

Stars (+1100)

The Stars were one of the final four teams in the 2023-24 NHL playoffs and head into next season as strong contenders again to make a deep postseason run.

Dallas advanced to the Western Conference Final in the previous two seasons, falling to the eventual cup champion Vegas Golden Knights and the Oilers in respective seasons.

The Stars are stacked across the board and have one of the most balanced teams, a perfect blend of youthful exuberance and seasoned veterans. In addition, they have one of the NHL's elite netminders, Jake Oettinger.

The youth contingent includes Calder Trophy odds contender Logan Stankoven, along with Wyatt Johnston and Jason Robertson. They also have Miro Heiskanen, my 2025 Norris Trophy odds player to watch.

Dallas re-signed Matt Duchene, perhaps its most important UFA, and brought on rugged defenseman Matt Dumba to bolster the back end. However, they lost Chris Tanev and Jani Hakanpää to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

In addition, Joe Pavelski confirmed his retirement, and Ryan Suter signed with the St. Louis Blues.

My Stanley Cup team to watch

Predators (+1800)

Talk about making a tsunami-size splash in free agency. According to BetMGM, the Nashville Predators' 2024-25 Stanley Cup odds shortened from +3500 to +1600 after swooping up forwards Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault, and defenseman Brady Skjei.

In addition to those marquee free-agent signings, the Preds secured goalie Juuse Saros for the next eight years. Saros, the 2021-22 Vezina finalist, is only 29 years old and should have at least a few elite years left.

And we're talking about a team that, even without Stamkos, Marchessault, and Skjei, was one of the NHL's best down the stretch in 2023-24. Take advantage of DraftKings' +1800 odds before they shorten.

2025 NHL Presidents' Trophy odds

A curse worse than being on the cover of the Madden video game? Yeah, that might just exist.

The NHL awards the Presidents' Trophy to the team with the best regular season record, which rarely equates to winning the Stanley Cup.

The last time a team finished with the best regular-season record and hoisted Lord Stanley's Cup was over a decade ago in 2012-13, when the Chicago Blackhawks achieved the double.

But you can bet on which team will drive for show in the regular season and fail to putt for dough in the postseason.

How to read Stanley Cup odds

Stanley Cup odds reflect the probability of each NHL team winning the championship and are typically presented in American odds format (+XXX). Lower odds signify a higher probability, while higher odds indicate a lower probability.

For example, a $100 bet at +500 odds would win you $500, plus your original $100 stake, totaling $600.

A team with +750 odds to win the Stanley Cup is given an 11.76% implied probability of doing so with a $100 winning bet returning a $750 profit, plus your $100 stake ($850 total).

A team with +1500 odds would have higher or longer odds, and a lower implied probability of 6.25%, but a win on a $100 bet would return a profit of $1,500 if it hits.

How to bet on Stanley Cup futures odds

There are many facets to take into consideration when making your Stanley Cup futures bet or bets, including the following:

Roster and personnel updates: Injuries, suspensions, and, to a lesser extent, hot and cold streaks of a team's most influential players all impact a team's Stanley Cup futures odds. Also, make sure the roster isn't too old or too young. Both can have severe implications in the playoffs.

Playoff experience: It's best to back a team with players suited for the NHL playoffs or a wealth of playoff experience. For example, Matthew Tkachuk is born to play in the postseason, usually elevating his level at the most meaningful time of year.

He has all the attributes required to thrive in the playoffs, including an ability to handle, even dominate, the physical rigors of a two-month postseason run.

The Vancouver Canucks were one of the 2023-24 Stanley Cup favorites midway through last season. However, they had a palpable lack of playoff experience, with only two players who'd previously won a Stanley Cup. Avoid backing teams like that as your futures pick.

Compare sportsbook prices: Find the sportsbook offering the best value on your Stanley Cup futures pick. Also, lock your pick in when you feel the odds are at their highest.

For example, if you believed in the Edmonton Oilers throughout the 2023-24 season, regardless of form, it would have been best to place the wager when the team fired former head coach Jay Woodcroft.

That was when they hit rock bottom, which would have yielded longer odds and a higher potential return.
