Cale Makar wasn't at his best last season but still finished third in Norris Trophy voting. The former winner will enter the upcoming season as the decisive 2024-25 Norris Trophy odds favorite, according to our NHL betting sites

While Makar isn't a complete and utter shoo-in by the NHL odds, he should claim his second Norris Trophy if he can avoid the injury bug and consistently perform to his potential.

Quinn Hughes, the defending Norris winner, might have something to say about that. The Canucks' ace is a year wiser and enters the 2024-25 campaign on the back of a 92-point haul, the most of all blue-liners.

Former winner Adam Fox is neck and neck with Hughes, trading between +600 and +800 across our best sports betting sites.

Miro Heiskanen is my player to watch, while Roman Josi's odds shortened after the Nashville Predators, thanks to a dominant free-agent haul, improved their Stanley Cup odds.

Norris Trophy favorites

Cale Makar (+300)

The former Norris Trophy winner fell just short of his ultimate goal in 2024, letting the award for best defenseman slip through his fingers. The 2024 finalist will be raring to go again this season.

Arguably the NHL's most fluid skating D-man, Makar is expected to accumulate Norris Trophies as his career moves forward. Unsurprisingly, he's opened as the 2024-25 favorite.

Makar finished last campaign second among defensemen in scoring, amassing 90 points over 77 games. He scored 1.17 points per game, leading that category. Makar's plus-15 rating damaged his chance of winning the Norris, with Hughes miles ahead at plus-38.

Quinn Hughes (+800)

The Norris Trophy has been skewing toward the league's best offensive defenseman for years. Hughes led all blue-liners with 92 points (17 goals, 75 assists), two points ahead of Makar. Ultimately, that was enough to win his first Norris Trophy.

The 24-year-old logged the most even-strength points (54) of all defensemen, was second in power-play points (38), and finished with a plus-38, the fourth-best overall mark and best of the Norris finalists.

The highest plus/minus of the last four Norris Trophy winners was Makar, with a plus-48 in 2022.

Hughes finished last season with 75 assists, the fourth blue-liner in NHL history to record three straight 60-plus-assist seasons, joining Ray Bourque, Bobby Orr, and Paul Coffey.

Adam Fox (+800)

Fox won the award in 2021 and is consistently among the league's top blue-liners. While he didn't live up to the lofty expectations perpetually placed on him in 2023-24, Fox is poised and prepped for a run at his second Norris Trophy.

Fox finished the 2023-24 campaign with 73 points in 72 games, ranking six among defensemen.

My Norris Trophy player to watch

Miro Heiskanen (+1300)

Keep tabs on Heiskanen in the forthcoming campaign. The dude is a stud and ready for his best campaign yet. I backed Heiskanen to win the Norris in my 2025 NHL award predictions. The 24-year-old regressed last season, notching 54 points in 71 games, but I expect him to be much better in the 2024-25 season.

Two years ago, Heiskanen had 73 points in 79 games. He's a superb quarterback on the power play and is lucky enough to play on one of the best offensive teams in the league. There is no ceiling for Heiskanen, who has often been compared to the one and only Nicklas Lidström.

Best odds: +1300 via FanDuel| Implied probability: 7.14%

There hasn't been a repeat Norris Trophy winner in the last nine seasons. Erik Karlsson, who won in 2014-15 and 2022-23, is the last back-to-back winner.

How to read Norris Trophy futures odds

Reading Norris Trophy odds is straightforward. Odds are usually presented in a format like +500 or -200. Positive odds (e.g., +500) show how much profit you’d make on a $100 bet.

For example, a $100 bet at +500 odds would win you $500, plus your original $100 stake, totaling $600. Negative odds (e.g., -200) indicate how much you need to bet to win $100. So, a $200 bet at -200 odds would win you $100, plus your $200 stake, totaling $300.

These odds also reflect the probability of a team winning the championship. Lower odds (e.g., +300) suggest a higher likelihood, while higher odds (e.g., +2000) indicate a lower probability.

Sportsbooks adjust these odds based on performance, injuries, trades, and betting patterns.

How to bet on Norris Trophy futures odds

The Norris Trophy has become an award designated for the NHL's best offensive defenceman. Those who produce offensively are the most likely finalists and winners.

So keep that in mind when choosing your Norris Trophy picks.

Does he play on an offensive team? Along with backing someone who tallies a ton of points, make sure he plays for a team that can frequently light the lamp.

For example, Evan Bouchard, Miro Heiskanen, and Makar fit this bill. Each player suits up for offensively potent teams, increasing their chances of winning the individual accolade.

Is the player injury-prone? Ensure you're selecting a durable blue liner who spends way more time on the ice than on the treatment table.

Is the player a power-play specialist? This corresponds to the previous category, but it's imperative you back those who are power-play specialists, quarterbacks if you will.

Also, do they quarterback a proficient or middling power play? Bouchard quarterbacks arguably the NHL's best power play, further lifting his Norris stock. Last year's winner, Hughes, scored 38 of 82 points on the power play.
