Connor McDavid, the 2024-25 Hart Trophy odds favorite based on the NHL odds from our best NHL betting sites, will almost assuredly start the forthcoming season as the front-runner to win his fourth MVP award.

The three previous winners sit atop the 2024-25 Hart Trophy odds leaderboard, with 2023-24 MVP Nathan MacKinnon and 2021-22 winner Auston Matthews trending closely behind the Edmonton Oilers' megastar.

The 2018-19 winner and 2023-24 finalist Nikita Kucherov is among the 2024-25 favorites, trending slightly behind the New Jersey Devils' Jack Hughes.

McDavid is trading between +165 and +180 at our best sports betting sites as we enter the dog days of summer. DraftKings and Caesars offer the best value for MacKinnon (+650), while FanDuel and BetMGM (+1000) provide the top value for Matthews.

Unsurprisingly, all of their teams are prominently featured in the Stanley Cup odds.

Hart Trophy favorites

Connor McDavid (+180)

McDavid will enter the 2024-25 campaign fresh off winning the Conn Smythe Trophy in his first Stanley Cup appearance. He became the second non-goalie on a losing team to capture one of the most coveted individual awards. The first was Reggie Leach in 1976.

McDavid is the massive 2024-25 favorite as the offseason ensues. He finished the 2023-24 campaign with 132 points in 76 games, the third most behind Kucherov and MacKinnon.

McDavid became the fourth player to register 100 assists in a single season, and Kucherov joined him in that rarified air a few weeks later. The other three to accomplish the feat were Bobby Orr, Wayne Gretzky, and Mario Lemieux.

McDavid was particularly spectacular on home ice, notching 83 points in 37 games at Rogers Place. He went on to win the Conn Smythe Trophy despite the Oilers' Game 7 loss to the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final.

Nathan MacKinnon (+650)

MacKinnon won his first Hart Trophy after nudging out McDavid and Kucherov for the 2024 award. The Avs' megastar had an exceptional 2023-24 campaign, scoring a point in all but two contests at home. He scored 51 goals, busting through the 50-goal threshold for the first time in his 11-season career.

MacKinnon was forced to take on more of the offensive load in captain Gabriel Landeskog's prolonged absence. Landeskog missed the entire 2023-24 campaign.

MacKinnon was also without Valeri Nichushkin for about a third of the season. He'll have to get used to that, as Nichushkin entered Stage 3 of the player's assistance program after violating the Stage 2 terms.

Auston Matthews (+1000)

The world's best goal scorer just missed out on being included as a finalist for the 2023-24 award. He potted 69 goals and had about a million chances to score a milestone 70th but was denied by various netminders and a lot of iron.

Despite his outrageous goals haul, Matthews endured a few inconsistent patches, preventing him from nudging McDavid, Kucherov, or MacKinnon out of the top three. He had 106 points, the sixth-best in the NHL.

Matthews won the award in 2022 and has scored at least 40 goals six times, two of which he netted at least 60.

My 2025 Hart Trophy player to watch

Matthew Tkachuk (+4000)

After winning the Stanley Cup, Matthew Tkachuk will walk into Amerant Bank Arena for the 2024-25 season with even more confidence in his sauntering swagger. The Panthers assistant captain has played in Florida for two seasons, both culminating with a Stanley Cup Final berth.

He endured a slight regression regarding offensive production in 2023-24, notching 88 points in 80 games, his lowest total in the last three seasons.

That won't matter to Tkachuk, who took the Stanley Cup for a dip after securing the Panthers' first-ever title.

I expect Tkachuk to score north of 100 points in 2024-25, achieving a similar total as he did during his last season in Calgary (104 points) and his first in Florida (109 points in 79 games).

The 2022-23 Hart Trophy finalist will be among the favorites if he eclipses the 100-point mark, so I recommend getting in on the Tkachuk action while he's still a long shot.

How to bet on Hart Trophy futures odds

Understand the odds: Familiarize yourself with the odds listed by each sportsbook for different players to win the Hart Trophy. The player with the lowest odds is considered the favorite.

Look at historical data: Has the player previously won the award, and what position does the individual you're considering backing play? Centers have won over three times as many Hart Trophies as any other position.

Look at the supporting cast: Who does the Hart Trophy candidate play alongside? Will they help or hinder his chances of winning MVP?

Research player performances: Dive into the statistics of the player. The Hart Trophy is usually handed out to an offensive leader, so concentrate on associated stats. Does the player perform better against teams he plays more often?

Stay up to date: Make sure you stay current on injuries to the candidate and his supporting cast. Find out whether there are any suspensions and also look at strength of schedule. Is the player on a hot or cold streak?

Cash-out or hold: Depending on how the season progresses and the player's performance, you can cash out if the odds are in your favor or hold onto your bet until the end of the season to see if your chosen player wins the Hart.

How to read Hart Trophy futures odds

Reading Hart Trophy odds is straightforward. Odds are usually presented in a format like +500 or -200. Positive odds (e.g., +500) show how much profit you’d make on a $100 bet.

For example, a $100 bet at +500 odds would win you $500, plus your original $100 stake, totaling $600. Negative odds (e.g., -200) indicate how much you need to bet to win $100. So, a $200 bet at -200 odds would win you $100, plus your $200 stake, totaling $300.

These odds also reflect the probability of a team winning the championship. Lower odds (e.g., +300) suggest a higher likelihood, while higher odds (e.g., +2000) indicate a lower probability.

Sportsbooks adjust these odds based on performance, injuries, trades, and betting patterns.
