The Philadelphia Flyers' Matvei Michkov remains the favorite by the Calder Trophy odds from our best NHL betting sites, trading just ahead of No. 1 draft pick Macklin Celebrini heading into the new NHL season.

Michkov played 91 regular-season games in the KHL and should enter training camp as one of the most well-equipped rookies to handle the physicality and speed of the NHL.

Celebrini, who the San Jose Sharks selected with the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, is trending closely behind Michkov, according to our best sports betting sites.

Dallas Stars forward Logan Stankoven is one of the players to watch. The 21-year-old is eligible despite entering his second season, thanks to playing just 24 games last campaign. He already has playoff experience, providing a discernible advantage over the others.

Most contenders aren't playing with Stanley Cup odds contenders. However, Stankoven is, and many of the others will immediately make their teams better.

Calder Trophy favorites

Matvei Michkov (+450)

Though Connor Bedard will always be the prized jewel of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, the Flyers got a beauty with the No. 7 pick, and he'll be NHL-ready for the 2024-25 campaign.

Michkov will enter the 2024-25 NHL season at 19 years old after departing the KHL and signing his rookie deal with the Flyers. He has benefited from playing against older competition as a member of St. Petersburg SKA and Sochi HC since 2021-22. He scored 19 goals and tallied 22 assists in 47 games last season.

The Flyers still have needs throughout their lineup, but Michkov will surely slot into an immediate top-six role, provided with power-play time as well. He's the rightful favorite, and the odds are close enough at the top of the board to justify a bet on him at this stage.

Macklin Celebrini (+500)

Like Bedard, Celebrini was a foregone conclusion to go No. 1 overall.

The Boston University product scored 32 goals and 64 points while winning the 2024 Hobey Baker Award as college hockey's best men's player.

Celebrini should inject some immediate life into a Sharks franchise that has finished with 77, 60, and 47 points in the last three seasons. They haven't made the Stanley Cup playoffs since losing to the St. Louis Blues in the 2019 Western Conference Final.

Expect that to change during Celebrini's tenure on the West Coast.

Best odds: +500 via DraftKings | Implied probability: 16.67%

Cutter Gauthier (+650)

Gauthier was the fifth overall pick of the Flyers in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. He played his NCAA hockey with Boston College and scored 38 goals and 27 assists last season.

Gauthier was dealt from the Flyers to the Anaheim Ducks last season and should find himself in a much more desirable offensive environment.

Some project Gauthier to feature on the Ducks' top line alongside fellow recent top draft picks Leo Carlsson and Troy Terry.

My 2025 Calder Trophy player to watch

Logan Stankoven (+550)

Some may forget that Stankoven is still classified as a rookie and is thus eligible for the award.

The 47th overall pick of the Dallas Stars in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft played 24 regular season games last season and tallied six goals and eight assists while averaging a modest 14:40 of time on ice per game.

He also notched eight points through 19 playoff games while helping the Stars reach the Western Conference Final. Already having playoff experience provides the forward with a discernible advantage over the others.

Stankoven may not have the same access to ice time and shots as the others mentioned above, but he will benefit from playing alongside proven and accomplished veteran players.

The 21-year-old is expected to play on the second line with Jamie Benn and Wyatt Johnston, and the +550 odds at DraftKings are much better than we're seeing around the industry, where he's trading much closer to Michkov.

Bedard ran away with last season's Calder Trophy race, with some sportsbooks closing the market fairly early. The 2024-25 campaign is shaping up to be a neck-and-neck race among the lead candidates.

How to bet on Calder Trophy futures odds

There are a few essential tips to keep in mind before locking in your Calder Trophy futures picks, including:

Playing time: Make sure the player you're backing will be a consistent on-ice presence. While there's heaps of merit in picking a potentially excellent rookie who plays for a bonafide contender, like Stankoven, it's crucial to ensure they'll log consistent minutes.

How good is the team they play for? While some rookies are so elite that the team they play for is inconsequential, like Bedard in Chicago, not all players are part of that rarified air. Unless they are all but guaranteed to score points, don't jump in too fast on high draft picks playing for terrible teams. That said, at least you'll know they will get a ton of ice time.

Will they be the star of the show? No. 1 pick Celebrini will invariably be the star of the show in San Jose, making him an excellent Calder Trophy pick.

The same can be said for Wolf, who should be the No. 1 netminder in Calgary for the 2024-25 season. He'll have the platform to prove himself, with many eyes judging his every move. While that can go one of two ways, Wolf will be the architect of his own Calder Trophy destiny.

Second-year players that qualify: Stankoven played 24 games last year for the Stars, one under the 25-game threshold permitted to be eligible for the Calder Trophy.

That makes him arguably the best candidate for the 2024-25 award. He was outstanding in the Stars' Western Conference Final run and has a leg up on the other "rookies."

College or international experience: More mature players who have roughed it up in other professional leagues worldwide, like Michkov, with 91 games in the KHL under his belt, have an advantage over other rookies entering the NHL directly from the juniors.

The same can be said, though not quite to the same extent, for players who've spent a few years in the college ranks. Just make sure they'll be on the roster come training camp.

Position-based picks: Like the Hart Trophy, the Calder Trophy is often handed out to offensive-minded players who entertain and consistently produce on the scoresheet. A goaltender last won the award in 2008-09, while only three of the previous 11 winners were defensemen.
