Calder Trophy Odds 2025: Favorite Michkov Surges, Answering Celebrini Challenge
Matvei Michkov certainly answered the bell, scoring 10 points in five games after Macklin Celebrini notched eight in five. The Flyers' rookie recaptured his extensive lead atop the Calder Trophy odds leaderboard at our NHL betting sites.
He's the only player trading at minus-money odds, and his point-per-game average is a good reflection of why. He's also a staggering plus-13 since being benched by John Tortorella in early November. It looks like old-man Torts can still impact the younger generation.
Celebrini, Michkov's most formidable challenger, has points in six of the last eight games. Lane Hutson, Logan Stankoven, and Dustin Wolf round out the five favorites.
Calder Trophy odds 2024-25
Here are the latest Calder Trophy notes:
- Lane Hutson has been excellent offensively for the Montreal Canadiens (19 points), but has struggled on one of the worst defensive teams. He has a minus-12 rating through 28 games, the worst of all rookies
- Logan Stankoven's Stars are getting the best Stanley Cup odds of the five favorites
- Michkov leads all rookies in points (27), points per game (1), goals (11), and power-play points (12)
- Wolf, the highest-ranked goaltender among the 10 favorites, lost his last three starts, allowing 14 goals
Calder Trophy favorites 2024-25
Matvei Michkov (-200)
Torts said benching his star rookie is all part of the process. Well, it looks like it served as the perfect wakeup call for Michkov, who has been unstoppable since riding the pine for two games at the start of November.
Michkov was minus-8 through 13 games and is now plus-15, a staggering shift in a 14-game span.
Michkov's defensive improvement and five-on-five play has come a long way in such a short time. Seven of his 10 points prior to being benched came on the power play. Since then, 12 of his 17 points have come at even strength, proving he's not merely a power-play specialist.
His odds shortened from +115 to -200 over the last seven days. That's an implied win probability shift of 46.51% to 66.67%. At this expensive price, it's better to leave well enough alone, as a winning $10 bet will profit just $5.
A lot of the season remains, so let's see what happens in the coming weeks.

Macklin Celebrini (+200)
Celebrini is the real deal and will live up to the lofty hype of being the top pick. Thanks to a recurring hip injury, he endured a frustrating first month in the NHL. However, he has rebounded better than anyone could have hoped for and is amassing points at an elite rate.
While he's slowed down recently, Celebrini has 11 points in the last 10 and is scoring at a 0.84 point-per-game clip, the second most after Michkov.
Since Nov. 20, he's scoring at a point-per-game clip, just behind Michkov's 1.20. At the moment, it's a truly two-horse race, and the Sharks' No. 1 draft pick has some work to do to catch the surging Michkov.

Logan Stankoven (+4000)
Stankoven's odds plummeted over the last week, moving from +800 to +4000. That epic decrease is due to a substantial slowdown, with the 21-year-old notching just one point in the previous seven games.
He has only two points in the last 10 games and will need to get his act together quickly to remain relevant in this race.
He's still tied with Wolf for the fourth-shortest odds. However, he won't be able to keep Celebrini or Michkov within sight if he doesn't produce points more consistently.
Right now, a winning $10 bet will yield a $400 profit. While the potential profit is becoming increasingly appealing, his lack of production is quickly taking him out of contention.
That said, we still have almost five months left in the season for Stankoven to get right.

How to bet on Calder Trophy futures odds
There are a few essential tips to keep in mind before locking in your Calder Trophy futures picks, including:
Playing time: Make sure the player you're backing will be a consistent on-ice presence. While there's heaps of merit in picking a potentially excellent rookie who plays for a bonafide contender, like Stankoven, it's crucial to ensure they'll log consistent minutes.
How good is the team they play for? While some rookies are so elite that the team they play for is inconsequential, like Bedard in Chicago, not all players are part of that rarified air. Unless they are all but guaranteed to score points, don't jump in too fast on high draft picks playing for terrible teams. That said, at least you'll know they will get a ton of ice time.
Will they be the star of the show? No. 1 pick Celebrini will invariably be the star of the show in San Jose, making him an excellent Calder Trophy pick.
The same can be said for Wolf, who should be the No. 1 netminder in Calgary for the 2024-25 season. He'll have the platform to prove himself, with many eyes judging his every move. While that can go one of two ways, Wolf will be the architect of his own Calder Trophy destiny.
Second-year players that qualify: Stankoven played 24 games last year for the Stars, one under the 25-game threshold permitted to be eligible for the Calder Trophy.
That makes him arguably the best candidate for the 2024-25 award. He was outstanding in the Stars' Western Conference Final run and has a leg up on the other "rookies."
College or international experience: More mature players who have roughed it up in other professional leagues worldwide, like Michkov, with 91 games in the KHL under his belt, have an advantage over other rookies entering the NHL directly from the juniors.
The same can be said, though not quite to the same extent, for players who've spent a few years in the college ranks. Just make sure they'll be on the roster come training camp.
Position-based picks: Like the Hart Trophy, the Calder Trophy is often handed out to offensive-minded players who entertain and consistently produce on the scoresheet. A goaltender last won the award in 2008-09, while only three of the previous 11 winners were defensemen.
