Rory McIlroy is the consensus betting favorite by the 2024 British Open odds from our best golf betting sites as golf's oldest major returns to Royal Troon this summer.

The oddsboards for the 2024 PGA Tour season's three American majors look largely the same, with only minor shuffles near the top of the boards this far out from the events. The exception among the four major championships, as usual, comes with the British Open.

The British Open will be played at Royal Troon in Troon, Scotland for the first time since Henrik Stenson's 2016 victory. Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy has once again been set as the betting favorite for the final major of the year. He tied for fifth at Royal Troon in 2016 and for sixth at Royal Liverpool during Brian Harman's breakthrough major win in July 2023.

As usual, McIlroy is joined at the top of the major oddsboard at our best sports betting apps by Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm, who rank first and third, respectively, in the latest Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). Among these three, expect Rahm's odds to rise throughout the year following his announced departure for LIV Golf.

Read on as we preview the 2024 British Open odds for Royal Troon (odds via our best sports betting sites).

British Open favorite 2024

Rory McIlroy (+900 via BetMGM)

McIlroy finished T-5 during the 2016 Open Championship at Royal Troon and will, as always, be a popular bet for the final major of 2024. However, the 2024 major season will mark 10 years since his last major championship victory.

Still, Rahm's departure from the PGA Tour and the public eye will likely see his British Open odds rise over the next few months. As that happens, Rory's odds will surely shorten. This may be the best price we see barring a sustained run of poor results.

British Open odds 2024: Contender

Cameron Young (+4000 via bet365)

Amid a rather quiet 2023 season, Young broke through for a T-8 finish in the British Open. That was his second straight such result after a runner-up showing behind Cameron Smith at St Andrews in his debut in the oldest major championship in 2022.

The reigning PGA Tour Rookie of the Year will get his first win sooner than later. It's looking quite possible that it could even come in The Open. While his 2023 British Open odds rose higher than this, bettors run the risk of him claiming a handful of wins in the next year and this number losing its value.

British Open odds 2024: Long shot

Sepp Straka (+10000 via BetMGM)

The 30-year-old Austrian is on the rise.

Shortly after claiming his second career PGA Tour win in the John Deere Classic, Straka tied for second in the British Open at Royal Liverpool. That followed a T-7 showing in the 2023 PGA Championship, and he's now a lock for the 2023 European Ryder Cup Team.

Straka also has a ninth-place finish in the 2022 Players Championship on his resume and seems as though he'll be a regular winner on the PGA Tour over the next few years.

Tiger Woods' British Open odds

Woods withdrew from the final three majors of 2023 due to injury after having to pull out of the Masters (after he made the cut).

There's little reason to believe he'll tee it up competitively before the 2024 Masters. These odds will get higher amid his prolonged inactivity, and he'll be an ill-advised but popular bet whenever he next participates in a major.

British Open odds movement

There won't be a lot of movement in this early offering, with the exception of Viktor Hovland's immediate rise up the oddsboard with his FedEx Cup victory.

Factors that will contribute to the movement of odds over the next several months will be the results of the first three majors of 2024, weekly tournament results, and golfer injuries. Keep an eye on who's rising or falling on the oddsboard and head to the slower books for the best prices.

British Open betting analysis

Early in the 2024 PGA Tour season is the perfect time to stock up on long-shot British Open tickets. This market moves slower than any other golf futures market and bettors can take advantage of that fact by following the results, stats, and results trends on the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and even LIV Golf.

Value can especially come from up and coming young stars on the European circuit who enjoy success early in the calendar year before shifting to play more PGA Tour events in the U.S. Once they make that move their odds will shorten while being seen by a larger audience.

The 2024 Masters odds will be the first market to be updated by the sportsbooks. Keep an eye on those odds when looking to bet on any of 2024's other three majors.
