Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown leapfrogged teammate Jayson Tatum to become the consensus favorite by the 2024 NBA Finals MVP odds across our best NBA betting sites, and despite the Game 4 loss, he's still trading at minus money.

With the Boston Celtics leading the NBA championship odds for much of the season, Jayson Tatum had been the favorite by the NBA Finals MVP odds since they first became available.

However, teammate Jaylen Brown's scorching-hot scoring led to him taking the top spot from Tatum. Following another strong performance in Game 3, Brown moved to minus money, and he remains priced as such even with a poor performance in the Game 4 loss.

Luka Doncic is still a long shot to win the award due to the improbable nature of Dallas' chances to pull off the comeback.

Here is our look at the top 2024 NBA Finals MVP odds from our best sports betting sites:

NBA Finals MVP favorites

Jaylen Brown (-222 via BetMGM)

Tatum's biggest competition for the award comes from his own teammate, who Jason Kidd believes is the Celtics best player. Brown is leading Boston in points per game in the NBA Finals with 20.8 while chipping in 4.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists. His defense has really separated him from Tatum for the coveted honor.

He's been disruptive and has handled Doncic when asked to, at least until Friday's Game 4. Brown is averaging 1.5 steals and one block per game in the series and he might still be the best two-way player on the court.

Brown's already won one award over Tatum in the playoffs, earning Eastern Conference Finals MVP honors after averaging 29.8 points per game against the Indiana Pacers.

Jayson Tatum (+255 via DraftKings)

We advised folks to hold out on Tatum for better pricing in the event the Celtics stumbled at along the way. While Boston hasn't slipped up in the NBA Finals, Tatum's price to win MVP has only lengthened due to his shooting woes. Trading at minus-money to win the award heading into the Finals, Tatum shot just 31.6% from the floor while averaging 17 points per game across the series' first two games.  He had a bounce-back performance in Game 3, leading Boston withe 31 points, but it might be a case of too little, too late.

Tatum has been a star in every facet in the Finals aside from his inability to score. He's put up two double-doubles, one with rebounds and another with assists, posting a respectable 7.8 rebounds per game and 6.3 assists per game.

The underrated piece of it for Tatum has been his defense. While the Celtics are loaded with All-Defensive caliber players, Tatum's no slouch either and was a big reason the Mavericks didn't scored 100 points until Game 4. Tatum's MVP case is bolstered by the fact that no single player on Boston is putting up jaw-dropping numbers.

Luka Doncic (+1400 via bet365)

Doncic has ascended the oddsboard all postseason, carrying the Mavericks to their first NBA Finals berth in over a decade. He was monstrous against the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Western Conference Finals and has continued his impressive play against the Celtics in a losing effort.

Doncic is averaging 29.5 points, eight rebounds, 5.8 assists, and 2.3 3-pointers per game against Boston. He also managed a triple-double in Game 2 while nearly getting the Mavericks back into it during the fourth quarter. Given his eye-popping statistics, Doncic could theoretically win the award even if Dallas loses the series.

The biggest thing working against him, though, other than being down 3-1, is that he's been exposed defensively. Doncic was routinely blown by Jrue Holiday in Game 2, specifically. Holiday's efforts against Doncic have helped him gain long-shot status to win Finals MVP.

NBA Finals MVP odds explained

NBA Finals MVP odds are a way for sportsbooks to set the probability of a specific player winning the MVP award for the NBA Finals. These odds represent the sportsbook's estimation of a player's likelihood to be named the NBA Finals MVP based on various factors such as performance, team success, and historical trends.

The odds for each player are determined based on a combination of factors, including their regular-season and playoff performance, team success, historical trends, public opinion, and betting patterns. Sportsbooks adjust the odds throughout the series based on the players' performances and other relevant factors.

The shorter the odds, the more likely the player is to win the award in the eyes of the sportsbooks. If a player is +260 to win NBA Finals MVP, that means they have a greater chance of winning it than a player that is +1700. However, a bet pays out more if the odds are longer.

It's important to note that odds are not a guarantee but rather a representation of the sportsbook's estimation of the probability of a particular outcome. Different sportsbooks may offer slightly different odds, so it's advisable to compare odds from multiple sources to find the best value.
