Playing the Baltimore Orioles seems to always cheer the New York Yankees up, and the old rivals will close out their 2021 season series on Thursday’s baseball betting card.

New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles

Wednesday, September 15, 2021 - 07:05 PM EDT at Oriole Park

New York got the ball rolling with a 7-2 triumph in Tuesday’s opener, the victory guaranteeing the Yankees their fifth consecutive season series win over Baltimore. The Yankees then rallied with a pair of runs in the ninth for a 4-3 victory on Wednesday, a strange inning that included the Oriole Park grounds crew being ejected. Both contests came up short on the totals, leaving the ‘under’ a winner in six of the nine games at Camden Yards this season. For the 71st-straight meeting, the best online betting sites are favoring the Yankees over the Orioles with New York favored -230 and up at various shops. Jordan Montgomery (5-6, 3.71) is on tap for New York against Baltimore’s Chris Ellis (1-0, 2.08), and scoreboard bettors are looking at 10 for their target.

Yanks Looking to Extend Win Streak to Four

In an era of exit velocity and launch angle, it was a dying quail off Brett Gardner’s bat that helped the Yankees to Wednesday’s win. Gio Urshela also contributed a 2-run homer, his 12 th of the season, and when the dust cleared on the day’s schedule, New York was locked in a virtual 3-way tie with Toronto and Boston for the AL wild card slots.

While his defense didn’t help him, Montgomery was his own worst enemy last Friday in a Subway Series loss to the Mets. The Yankees closed as small favorites on the MLB betting odds, and the Mets put up a 5-spot against Montgomery in the third to take a lead they would not relinquish in the 10-3 final. He needed nearly 80 pitches to get one out into the fourth, and Montgomery burned through nearly 100 without finishing the fifth against Baltimore in his assignment before that.

Montgomery only allowed one run to the Orioles in that September 4 outing, his third start against them this season. The other two came in Baltimore and also resulted in losses, Montgomery working a combined eight innings and allowing seven runs. Trey Mancini has been Montgomery’s toughest out in the O’s lineup, the Baltimore first sacker hitting .429 (9-21) with one homer and four walks.

Next Loss is Number 100 for O’s

Acting crew chief Tim Timmons didn’t actually eject the Baltimore grounds crew on Wednesday, just shooed them off the field during the tense 9th-inning action. Shortly after the crew departed, Gardner blooped his game-winner and yet another losing chapter in the Orioles’ 2021 season came to an end.

Considering the numbers Ellis has put up since the Orioles claimed him off waivers last month from Tampa Bay, they might be wondering why the 28-year-old has managed to stick with any of the previous seven teams he’s been part of since being picked in the third round of the 2014 draft by the Angels. It’s a small sample size of just three starts, but Ellis looked fine last Friday with five innings of 1-run baseball against the Blue Jays, helping Baltimore to a 6-3 win as a .

Ellis blanked the Yankees over five innings prior to the assignment against Toronto, allowing just one hit in Baltimore’s 4-3 win in New York as an even bigger underdog. That was the first and only time Ellis faced the Yankees. Including a relief outing he made for the Rays in Baltimore earlier this season, Ellis has allowed just one run over nine innings at Oriole Park.

Rain in Charm City Forecast

Timmons is in the role of crew chief while Alfonso Marquez is away, and Carlos Torres will set up behind the dish on Thursday. The 41-year-old veteran of seven MLB seasons has produced a slight ‘over’ lean on the year with a 14-10 O/U record. ‘Over’ bettors have returned to the pay window each of the last four times Torres has made a plate assignment at Camden Yards.

The sun will still be out for this happy hour contest, though it may not be seen due to all of the clouds in the Baltimore area. There is a 50% chance of afternoon rain leading up to game time, with the thermometer around 80° at first pitch and a 5-10 mph easterly breeze (right to left). I’ll tag along with the season trend and go with a free MLB pick on the ‘under.’
