The idea that “records are meant to be broken” has persisted over the years, and several of the most prominent Super Bowl records have been broken in the last decade.

Our Super Bowl records and odds to break them suggest history is on the line in Super Bowl 2025. The Kansas City Chiefs look to be the first team ever to three-peat, while Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley has the single-season rushing record in his sights.

We examine some of the most iconic Super Bowl records and offer a play on one that has a decent chance of being broken in this Chiefs vs. Eagles rematch.

Super Bowl passing yards record

Record set in 2018 by Tom Brady | Odds to be broken: +5000

Tom Brady’s Super Bowl record of 505 passing yards set in 2018 may never be broken. It is crazy to think that Brady threw for 505 yards and three touchdowns with zero interceptions against the Eagles ... and still lost the game. Brady’s 505 yards broke his own record of 466 passing yards set the year before.

Kurt Warner’s 414 passing yards in 2000 was the only other instance where a quarterback threw for more than 377 yards in a Super Bowl. There have only been 27 instances of a quarterback throwing for 500 or more yards in a game in NFL history.

Super Bowl passing touchdowns record

Record set in 1995 by Steve Young | Odds to be broken: +3000

Super Bowl 29 is responsible for several records, like being the highest-scoring Super Bowl. The Chargers and 49ers combined for 75 points in a 49-26 49ers win. It is also the only Super Bowl to have 10 total touchdowns combined and the first in which both teams scored in all four quarters.

Six of the 10 total touchdowns were passing touchdowns by Steve Young. Only two quarterbacks - Young and Joe Montana - have thrown for five touchdowns in a Super Bowl. Could Jalen Hurts or Patrick Mahomes join that list at Super Bowl 2025? Our best sports betting sites give them a 3.23% implied probability of doing so.

Super Bowl rushing yards record

Record set in 1988 by Timmy Smith | Odds to be broken: +1100

Not only did Ricky Sanders set the Super Bowl record for receiving yards in Super Bowl 22 in 1988, but Washington’s Timmy Smith set the Super Bowl rushing record with 204 rush yards in the same game. That broke Marcus Allen’s 191-yard performance from 1984.

Barkley has already rushed for 2,447 yards this season, the second-most of all time. It is worth a flier at +1100 odds at our best sports betting apps that he (or Kareem Hunt) can break the Super Bowl rushing record. Barkley already rushed for 205 yards in the divisional round against the Rams and also ran for 255 yards in a regular-season win.

He has ripped off a 60-yard run in five games this season, so Barkley does not necessarily need a lot of volume to break the record. It will be difficult, though, as the Chiefs have not allowed a 100-yard rusher in the playoffs with Steve Spagnuolo as defensive coordinator.

Super Bowl receiving yards record

Record set in 1989 by Jerry Rice | Odds to be broken: +2000

Jerry Rice set the record for most receiving yards in a Super Bowl in 1989, helping the 49ers beat the Bengals 20-16 in Super Bowl 23.

Rice broke Ricky Sanders’ record of 193 receiving yards, which lasted just one short year, and he is one of just four players with 160-plus receiving yards in a Super Bowl all-time. For his record-setting performance in Super Bowl 23, Rice won the game’s MVP award.

Super Bowl player scoring record

Record set by James White (2017) and Jalen Hurts (2023) | Odds to be broken: +1600

To score 20 points in a game, one needs at least three touchdowns, as kickers are not likely to convert the necessary six-plus field goals to do so. James White set a Super Bowl record with 14 receptions in his 20-point performance in 2017.

Meanwhile, Hurts’ 20-point performance came in his only Super Bowl appearance in Chiefs vs. Eagles just two years ago. In that game, Hurts joined Otto Graham as the only quarterbacks to rush for three touchdowns in a playoff game in NFL history. He also scored three rushing touchdowns in the NFC Championship.
