How many "braves" are enough "braves"?

Well, as we look at the Super Bowl national anthem odds history and prop bets with NFL odds from our best Super Bowl betting sites we discover that question makes all the difference.

Country star Reba McEntire performed the national anthem at the Super Bowl last year, and an extra "brave" at the end of the song sent the betting world into chaos. Depending on your best sports betting sites, the Under or the Over might have cashed - it all depends on when they decided the song was over.

Hopefully, this year's performer, Jon Batiste, makes things much more simple for bettors and our best sports betting apps alike. Batiste is a 20-time Grammy nominee and five-time winner, and he earned an Oscar for his work on the movie "Soul."

As we look ahead to this year's Super Bowl national anthem odds with Batiste announced as the performer, we can begin looking at his history and make our best predictions for this career-defining performance.

Super Bowl national anthem odds

Super Bowl national anthem odds aren't yet available at our best NFL prop betting sites, but we'll add them once they're live.

We had odds for this market as early as Jan. 24, 2024 when the Over/Under for McEntire's performance opened at 83 seconds - which would have been the shortest national anthem in Super Bowl history.

Bettors immediately pounced on that line, which moved to 90.5 seconds in the days before Super Bowl 58.

How long was the Super Bowl LVIII national anthem?

If you clocked McEntire's performance from the moment she started singing until she stopped, the unofficial time was around 95 seconds.

However, many of our best sportsbooks changed their rules to state that the anthem ends after the first "brave," and that trimmed the official length of her anthem to 88 seconds - cashing the Under on the closing total of 90.5 seconds.

John Ewing of BetMGM reminded bettors of that stipulation shortly after the anthem and confirmed that the Under was indeed the official winner. That said, the book eventually paid out bettors on both sides of this year's anthem, which is also what happened at many shops after the Gladys Knight controversy in 2019.

Super Bowl national anthem props

Betting on the length of the national anthem isn't the only prop associated with the pregame song.

Here were a few other anthem markets that were available for Super Bowl 58 and a look at the winning side:

Will any scoring drive take less time than the national anthem?

ResultOdds
Yes-260
No+170

The Chiefs scored a touchdown on a one-play drive in the third quarter that took just four seconds, which helped "Yes" cash in a runaway affair.

Length of last 'brave' of national anthem

ResultOdds
Over 4.5 seconds-120
Under 4.5 seconds-120

This one cashed no matter how you slice it, as McEntire stretched out multiple "braves" in her Super Bowl 2024 performance. It was the source of controversy at some books depending on their house rules, as her anthem performance went Over 90.5 seconds in total but Under that mark before the end of the first "brave."

Who will be shown first during national anthem?

TeamOdds
Kansas City Chiefs player or staff-140
San Francisco 49ers player or staff+100

Once again, the camera didn't show the Chiefs first even though they continue to be favored in this market year after year. Instead, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan was the first to make an appearance on-screen during McEntire's performance.

Player to be shown first during the national anthem

PlayerOdds
Patrick Mahomes-165
Brock Purdy+120

While the 49ers were the first ones shown overall, Mahomes was the quarterback with the earliest screen time during the anthem, beating out Purdy in this market. That was a reverse of the previous Super Bowl, when Jalen Hurts cashed over Mahomes in this market.

Will any player/coach cry during national anthem?

ResultOdds
Yes-165
No+120

A year after Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni breathed life into one of the NFL's best memes, Chiefs defensive star Chris Jones was seen crying on the sidelines to continue the streak and cash the "Yes" for Super Bowl prop bettors.

Super Bowl national anthem history

Jon Batiste is perhaps the least-recognizable name of recent national anthem performers, but he's absolutely qualified to deliver the anthem. Batiste has 20 Grammy nominations and five wins, and he's also won an Academy Award.

  • Did Kelly Clarkson know about her Super Bowl national anthem odds? The inaugural American Idol champion is the only crooner to hit the number right on the nose.
  • Only two duos have performed the national anthem, and the performances have averaged 2:13.
  • Group acts in general come in longer than average. Four groups of two-plus singers have performed the Super Bowl national anthem, with the Backstreet Boys (1:49) the quickest.

How to read Super Bowl national anthem odds

Reading Super Bowl national anthem odds is straightforward. Odds are usually presented in a format like +500 or -200. Positive odds (e.g., +500) show how much profit you’d make on a $100 bet.

For example, a $100 bet at +500 odds would win you $500, plus your original $100 stake, totaling $600. Negative odds (e.g., -200) indicate how much you need to bet to win $100. So, a $200 bet at -200 odds would win you $100, plus your $200 stake, totaling $300.

These odds also reflect the probability of an outcome related to the Super Bowl national anthem. Lower odds (e.g., +300) suggest a higher likelihood, while higher odds (e.g., +2000) indicate a lower probability.

If Christian McCaffrey gets +500 odds and Deebo Samuel gets +1000, McCaffrey is considered more likely to score. If you bet $100 on McCaffrey and he finds paydirt, you’d get $600 back ($500 profit + $100 stake). Understanding these odds helps you make informed betting decisions and assess potential returns.
