Jim Harbaugh and Matt Eberflus sit atop the NFL Coach of the Year odds leaderboard as the 2024 NFL regular season begins.

Looking at the Coach of the Year betting trends is an excellent way to familiarize yourself with what has happened recently in the market and gain a more holistic understanding of what to look for in the coming season when locking in your Coach of the Year picks.

While Harbaugh and Eberflus are the undisputed favorites across our best NFL betting sites, the odds leaderboard is more jam-packed with potential winners than a fully loaded, double-the-meat 12-inch sub.

Seattle Seahawks first-year coach Mike Macdonald, the Green Bay Packers' Matt LaFleur, and new Atlanta Falcons boss Raheem Morris round out the five favorites.

Three of the five favorites enter their first season in charge of their respective teams (Harbaugh, Macdonald, and Morris).

Coach of the Year favorite

Jim Harbaugh (+1000)

Harbaugh won this award in runaway fashion the last time he took a new coaching job in the NFL during 2011 with the San Francisco 49ers, leading the team to a 13-3 mark. So it makes sense why he's the early co-favorite to do so again.

By the time he left four years later, Harbaugh had compiled the fifth-best winning percentage (69.5%) of any head coach in NFL history, even if he had worn out his welcome.

Harbaugh will be a fresh face for the Chargers, and that's more significant than simply leading a great team.

There's plenty of talent at his disposal to hit the ground running, but it's possible his previous reputation as an elite coach may hinder his quest in this market.

My Coach of the Year candidate to watch

Dan Campbell (+2500)

This is a bit of a funky market for long shots, as most of the NFL's best coaches are getting the longest odds because of the high expectations they've set for themselves.

That's certainly true for Campbell, who finished third in voting during 2023 after leading the Detroit Lions to their first NFC North title in 30 years.

But what if the team climbs even higher in 2024?

Surely, Campbell would get the lion's share of credit if Detroit claims the NFC's top seed for the first time in franchise history.

That isn't out of the question for a group whose 2023 core remains intact. The Lions' odds of posting the NFC's best record, and their Super Bowl odds, are way shorter than Campbell's COTY odds, which makes this an intriguing play at a long-shot price.

How to bet on NFL Coach of the Year

When betting on NFL Coach of the Year odds, find a reputable sportsbook that offers futures bets for this award.

Check out the odds for different coaches; for example, if Jim Harbaugh is at +500 and Matt Eberflus is at +800, Harbaugh is favored to win.

Decide how much you want to wager and place your bet. If you bet $100 on Harbaugh at +500 and he wins, you’ll get $600 back ($500 profit + $100 stake). Keep an eye on how the coaches' teams perform throughout the season to see how your bet is shaping up.

But remember, with odds movement in future markets, it's pretty heavily impacted by wins and perception. If a coach overcomes adversity, their odds will improve. Conversely, their odds will worsen if they underperform or fall short of expectations.

Public betting trends are important, too - if many people are betting on one coach, sportsbooks might adjust the odds to manage their risk.

Expert analysis and predictions also play a role, as they can sway public opinion and betting patterns. Understanding these factors can help you make smarter bets and potentially catch favorable odds shifts.

How to read NFL Coach of the Year odds

Reading NFL Coach of the Year odds is straightforward. Odds are usually presented in a format like +500 or -200. Positive odds (e.g., +500) show how much profit you’d make on a $100 bet.

For example, a $100 bet at +500 odds would win you $500, plus your original $100 stake, totaling $600. Negative odds (e.g., -200) indicate how much you need to bet to win $100. So, a $200 bet at -200 odds would win you $100, plus your $200 stake, totaling $300.

These odds also reflect the implied probability of a coach winning the award. Lower odds (e.g., +200) suggest a higher likelihood of winning, while higher odds (e.g., +1000) indicate a lower likelihood. Sportsbooks adjust these odds based on team performance, overcoming injuries, and betting patterns.

For example, if Jim Harbaugh has +500 odds and Matt Eberflus has +800 odds, Harbaugh is considered more likely to win. If you bet $100 on Harbaugh and he wins, you’d get $600 back ($500 profit + $100 stake). Understanding these odds helps you make informed betting decisions and assess potential returns.
