Trey Lance will receive the first chance to impress head coach Jim Harbaugh as the former Dallas Cowboys signal-caller is set to start. The 25-year-old tossed a touchdown pass in two of three preseason appearances last year with the Cowboys.

With Taylor Heinicke not expected to feature, Lance should get at least the first half to showcase his best stuff. The third QB spot is up for grabs, so motivation won't be an issue.

I have more confidence in his ability to throw at least one touchdown pass than DJ Uiagalelei, who will get the bulk of the second-half reps.

With Hendon Hooker and Kyle Allen battling for the backup job, I expect the Lions to deploy a pass-heavy attack. Dan Campbell will give both signal-callers enough reps to leave a lasting impression in their preseason opener, which should help get receivers more involved.

Additionally, the Lions won't feature their star running backs, and they don't have many other options in the backfield. Their other option, Craig Reynolds, had five attempts in two preseason appearances last year.

Hooker averaged 132 passing yards in his previous two preseason games, while veteran Kyle Allen has played his fair share of regular-season games in the NFL. He also appeared in two preseason contests last year with the Pittsburgh Steelers, averaging 130.5 passing yards.
