Packers head coach Matt LaFleur declared this week that every healthy player on the roster should go into the preseason opener expecting to play. Normally, news leaking that a bevy of starters would play causes movement in the point spread. But the fact that this line has not budged much throughout the week suggests LaFleur’s words may be more coachspeak than anything else.

New York suffered a setback early in training camp with starting quarterback Justin Fields suffering a dislocated toe. But for preseason purposes, that gave backup Tyrod Taylor more time to play with the starters, and I expect the veteran to play more than usual with Fields likely only playing a drive or two.

The Jets are only a play at the key number of three or better, as I would not back them at +2.5 or anything lower.

This total has risen as many as 4.5 points at our best sports betting apps throughout the week, and that feels like it is more of an indication of each coach’s plans to play more starters than usual than it is an indictment of how the defenses have looked in training camp.

Two of Green Bay’s last three preseason openers have been among the highest-scoring games in the first week, totaling 49 and 55. In the only game in that span that stayed under this projected total, the Packers offense still put up 23 points.

By backing the Jets on the point spread, I am confident New York will do its part in keeping up with the scoring if Green Bay’s offense is once again clicking early.
