Cowboys vs. 49ers Early Picks, Predictions & Odds for SNF Week 8

Can the Cowboys keep it close as road 'dogs when they square off with the injury-riddled 49ers on Sunday Night Football in Week 8?

Two of the most iconic franchises in the NFL meet on Sunday Night Football in Week 8 as the San Francisco 49ers are favorites by the Sunday Night Football odds when they host the Dallas Cowboys.

  • The Cowboys are off a bye week after losing 47-9 at home to the Lions in Week 6
  • The 49ers have started 3-4 for the third time in the last four seasons
  • San Francisco still has the second-best odds (behind the Lions) to win the NFC despite its early struggles and injury woes

Our Cowboys and 49ers early picks and odds expects Dallas to be competitive off a bye week, but thinks the best number is yet to come later in the week. It's all part of our Week 8 NFL predictions.

My early Cowboys vs. 49ers prediction: Cowboys +4.5

Dallas is rested off a bye week while San Francisco played arguably its most hard-hitting and mentally exhausting game of the season with the undefeated Chiefs in town last week.

The Cowboys are 2-1 SU off a bye week over the last three seasons, and have won 11 of their last 14 games in that span when having the rest advantage over their opponents.

It also should not be understated how significant Brandon Aiyuk’s injury is to the 49ers.

In 2023, quarterback Brock Purdy averaged 8.5 air yards per attempt when Aiyuk was on the field, but that number plummeted to 5.1 when he was off the field. And per ESPN Analytics/Next Gen Stats, Aiyuk’s 96 overall receiver score was the highest among all receivers in 2023.

Wideout Deebo Samuel is in hospital with pneumonia with no timetable to return and tight end George Kittle is considered day-to-day with a sprained foot.

Moneyline

  • 49ers best odds: -210 via BetMGM | Implied probability: 67.74%
  • Cowboys best odds: +185 via Caesars | Implied probability: 35.09%

There is a big 17-cent gap between BetMGM’s -210 odds and Caesars’ -227 moneyline odds (carrying a 69.42% implied probability) for San Francisco.

Per Vegas Insider's Patrick Everson, the Chiefs were the public play last week, while the sharpest bets came in on the 49ers. I would expect that to be the opposite this week, with San Francisco being the public play. Dallas’ 38-point home loss to Detroit looks worse than San Francisco’s 10-point home loss to the two-time defending Super Bowl champions.

Spread

  • 49ers best odds: -4 (-110) via BetMGM
  • Cowboys best odds: +4.5 (-110) via DraftKings

BetMGM is alone as the only one of our best sports betting apps offering a line of 49ers -4, as all others are at Cowboys +4.5.

Sportsbooks have already baked in Aiyuk’s injury to this line, so from here on the line movement will be more about the perception of each team.

This line has already come down as much as 2.5 points since last Wednesday according to the Week 8 NFL odds, as San Francisco had been lined as high as a 7-point favorite.

The fact that Dallas is coming off its worst home loss in 36 years of Jerry Jones’ ownership and its worst loss overall since 2010 is more likely to have this line bounce back slightly in San Francisco’s favor. Cowboys backers are better off waiting for the best number after 49ers money comes in.

Over/Under

  • Over best odds: 46.5 (-110) via FanDuel
  • Under best odds: 47 (-110) via BetMGM

Dallas has allowed 448.8 yards per game and 41.8 points per game in its last four home games. It is also the most points any team has allowed at home in a four-game span since the 1972-73 Houston Oilers.

While this is a road game, bettors will likely point to the Cowboys’ defensive struggles as reasons to back the Over. In addition, Kansas City’s 28 points scored against San Francisco’s defense in Week 7 were its most in the last 16 games, including playoffs.

Over backers should jump on the 46.5-point total offered at FanDuel, because the sportsbook is likely to align with the rest of its competitors at 47 or higher before long.
