The Cincinnati Bengals shook up the draft landscape this week by trading the No. 10 pick to the New York Giants for star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, filling their biggest roster hole in one move but leaving them without a first-round selection for the first time since 1989.

As part of our NFL draft predictions for every team, we break down the Bengals' full draft picks, biggest team needs, ideal prospect fits, mock draft projections, and our prediction for which player Cincinnati will draft with their first pick ahead of the first round, which begins tonight at 8 p.m. ET live on ABC, ESPN, and NFL Network.

🆘 Bengals team needs entering draft

We break down every team's projected NFL win totals with our best Over/Under picks by division.

  • Team needs: LB, OL, CB, EDGE, DB
  • Key additions: Dexter Lawrence (DT, via trade), Bryan Cook (S), Boye Mafe (EDGE), Kyle Dugger (S)
  • Key departures: Trey Hendrickson (EDGE, Ravens), Joseph Ossai (EDGE, Jets), Cam Taylor-Britt (CB, Colts), Geno Stone (S, Bills)

Cincinnati had the second-worst total defense in the NFL last season (382.1 yards per game) and the third-worst scoring defense (28.9 points per game), and while the Lawrence trade addresses the interior, the rest of the defense still needs serious work. Losing Hendrickson - who had double-digit sacks in four straight seasons - leaves a gaping hole off the edge that the Mafe signing alone doesn't fully solve. The linebacker group also needs a playmaker, and the secondary remains a concern even after adding Cook and Dugger, with protecting Joe Burrow always top of mind for an offensive line that can't afford any regression.

🏈 Bengals draft prospect fits

I asked NFL draft expert Rob Paul to pick the Bengals' best prospect fit in a dream scenario, their safest pick, and their best upside pick:

Pick type No. 41 pick Grade Paul's take
🌟 Dream pick D'Angelo Ponds, CB, Indiana 7.05 While Ponds lacks ideal size, he has everything else you could possibly want in a nickel - from the movement skills to the instincts to the feistiness - and he can step into a starting role as a rookie
🛡️ Safe pick CJ Allen, LB, Georgia 7.0 If Al Golden wants a high-floor linebacker to wear the green dot on his defense, Allen fits the mold as a high IQ player with the instincts and physicality to make an impact as a run defender as a rookie
🚀 Upside pick Treydan Stukes, DB, Arizona 7.05 Although an older prospect, Stukes offers upside with his versatility to play nickel or safety on top of his ridiculous track speed that gives him elite range in coverage to go with his impressive ball skills

The Bengals traded their first-round pick to acquire Dexter Lawrence, so their first selection comes at No. 41 in Round 2. Cincinnati's biggest remaining need is linebacker after struggling at the position all of last season, though the offensive line could also use reinforcements. That bears out in the market with linebacker as the clear favorite, especially after trading away the No. 10 pick.

I broke down the latest NFL draft position odds for all 32 teams ahead of the first round.

The Cincinnati Bengals' trade for Dexter Lawrence signals they're putting all their chips in, which means they need to add more to the back seven of their defense. Linebacker was a problem last season for Cincinnati, and adding a high-floor player like CJ Allen could help solve the issue. Allen's an institutional thumper who can immediately upgrade the Bengals' run defense. He has a high IQ and would wear the green dot for defensive coordinator Al Golden.
