After a disappointing encore to their conference title appearance, the Washington Commanders hold the No. 7 pick and need to surround Jayden Daniels with more weapons while continuing to build out Dan Quinn's defense at every level.
As part of our NFL draft predictions for every team, we break down the Commanders' full draft picks, biggest team needs, ideal prospect fits, mock draft projections, and our prediction for which player Washington will draft in the first round, which begins tonight at 8 p.m. ET live on ABC, ESPN, and NFL Network.

🆘 Commanders team needs entering draft
We break down every team's projected NFL win totals with our best Over/Under picks by division.
- Team needs: WR, CB, EDGE, OL, RB
- Key additions: Odafe Oweh (EDGE), K'Lavon Chaisson (EDGE), Leo Chenal (LB), Tim Settle (DL), Rachaad White (RB), Nick Cross (S)
- Key departures: Deebo Samuel (WR), Marshon Lattimore (CB), Bobby Wagner (LB), Von Miller (EDGE), Tyler Biadasz (C, Chargers)
Washington did most of its offseason shopping on defense, adding Oweh and Chaisson off the edge along with Chenal at linebacker. But the offense still needs a legitimate No. 2 receiver opposite Terry McLaurin after losing Samuel - the depth behind McLaurin is thin with Luke McCaffrey and Dyami Brown. Quinn could still use another disruptive force off the edge and more size in the secondary, while the offensive line lost its starting center in Biadasz.
🏈 Commanders draft prospect fits
I asked NFL draft expert Rob Paul to pick the Commanders' best prospect fit in a dream scenario, their safest pick, and their best upside pick tonight:
| Pick type | No. 7 pick | Grade | Paul's take |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🌟 Dream pick | Jeremiyah Love, RB, Notre Dame | 7.40 | Love is one of the five best players in this draft, and if he's on the board when the Commanders are picking, they might throw positional value out the window and take the best playmaker in the class |
| 🛡️ Safe pick | Carnell Tate, WR, Ohio State | 7.25 | Getting Jayden Daniels more help is a must for GM Adam Peters, and Tate would provide the former Heisman winner with a big play threat down the field who evokes another former Heisman winner, DeVonta Smith (just bigger) |
| 🚀 Upside pick | Rueben Bain Jr., DL, Miami | 7.35 | While Washington added pass rush help to Dan Quinn's defense, it still needs more juice in its front seven, and Bain has game-changing power as a pass rusher and is one of the most disruptive run defenders in the draft |

Washington needs to get Jayden Daniels more weapons in Year 3, but the defense could also use another impact player off the edge. Multiple mocks project the Commanders making an aggressive trade up from No. 7 to land a premier pass-rusher, but the market is still sold on this team drafting a receiver or a defensive back first.

Paul's pick at No. 3 (traded up from No. 7): David Bailey, EDGE, Texas Tech
- Pro comparison: Nik Bonitto
- Measurables: 6'4" | 251 lbs | 22 years old | RAS: 9.65
With GM Adam Peters in win-now mode as Jayden Daniels enters the third year of his rookie contract, could he make a splashy move and get Dan Quinn a defensive weapon? Bailey is as twitchy as they come and plays with a relentless motor. He's arguably the most pro-ready pass rusher in the class, and both Quinn (Micah Parsons) and Peters (Nick Bosa) come from places where they saw the impact of premier pass rushers. Bailey was No. 1 nationally in sacks (14.5) and No. 2 in pressures (81) in 2025.
Trade specifics: Commanders trade pick No. 7 (Round 1) and a 2027 first-round pick to Cardinals for pick No. 3 (Round 1).
