After a disappointing encore to their conference title appearance, the Washington Commanders hold the No. 7 pick and need to surround Jayden Daniels with more weapons while continuing to build out Dan Quinn's defense at every level.

As part of our NFL draft predictions for every team, we break down the Commanders' full draft picks, biggest team needs, ideal prospect fits, mock draft projections, and our prediction for which player Washington will draft in the first round, which begins Thursday at 8 p.m. ET live on ABC, ESPN, and NFL Network.

🆘 Commanders team needs entering draft

We break down every team's projected NFL win totals with our best Over/Under picks by division.

  • Team needs: WR, CB, EDGE, OL, RB
  • Key additions: Odafe Oweh (EDGE), K'Lavon Chaisson (EDGE), Leo Chenal (LB), Tim Settle (DL), Rachaad White (RB), Nick Cross (S)
  • Key departures: Deebo Samuel (WR), Marshon Lattimore (CB), Bobby Wagner (LB), Von Miller (EDGE), Tyler Biadasz (C, Chargers)

Washington did most of its offseason shopping on defense, adding Oweh and Chaisson off the edge along with Chenal at linebacker. But the offense still needs a legitimate No. 2 receiver opposite Terry McLaurin after losing Samuel - the depth behind McLaurin is thin with Luke McCaffrey and Dyami Brown. Quinn could still use another disruptive force off the edge and more size in the secondary, while the offensive line lost its starting center in Biadasz.

🏈 Commanders draft prospect fits

I asked NFL draft expert Rob Paul to pick the Commanders' best prospect fit in a dream scenario, their safest pick, and their best upside pick for Thursday:

Pick type No. 7 pick Grade Paul's take
🌟 Dream pick Jeremiyah Love, RB, Notre Dame 7.40 Love is one of the five best players in this draft, and if he's on the board when the Commanders are picking, they might throw positional value out the window and take the best playmaker in the class
🛡️ Safe pick Carnell Tate, WR, Ohio State 7.25 Getting Jayden Daniels more help is a must for GM Adam Peters, and Tate would provide the former Heisman winner with a big play threat down the field who evokes another former Heisman winner, DeVonta Smith (just bigger)
🚀 Upside pick Rueben Bain Jr., DL, Miami 7.35 While Washington added pass rush help to Dan Quinn's defense, it still needs more juice in its front seven, and Bain has game-changing power as a pass rusher and is one of the most disruptive run defenders in the draft

📝 Commanders mock draft consensus picks

I went through the latest mock drafts from other top experts across the industry and gathered their predictions for the Commanders' first pick in the 2026 NFL draft. Here's who they expect Washington to draft at No. 7:

Source Pick
Mel Kiper (ESPN) Carnell Tate, WR, Ohio State
Chad Reuter (NFL.com) Mansoor Delane, CB, LSU
Mike Renner (CBS) Sonny Styles, LB, Ohio State
Todd McShay (The Ringer) Omar Cooper Jr., WR, Indiana (at No. 16, trade back)
Dane Brugler (The Athletic) Jeremiyah Love, RB, Notre Dame
Charles McDonald (Yahoo) David Bailey, EDGE, Texas Tech

Nobody agrees on what Washington should do at No. 7, with all six mocks we surveyed projecting a different player. Receiver is the most common theme - ESPN's Mel Kiper has Carnell Tate and The Ringer's Todd McShay has Omar Cooper Jr. in a trade back - but the rest of the projections range across all three levels on defense and Paul's dream pick in Love. Instead, he's going with a receiver for Daniels.

🔮 Commanders draft prediction 2026

See Rob Paul's expert NFL mock draft for projections and analysis of all 32 first-round picks.

Paul's pick at No. 7: Carnell Tate, WR, Ohio State

  • Pro comparison: Bigger DeVonta Smith
  • Measurables: 6'2" | 192 lbs | 21 years old | RAS: N/A

After bringing in pass rush help in free agency, Washington Commanders GM Adam Peters will likely want to add a pass catcher early in the draft, and who better than the top wide receiver prospect? Carnell Tate has phenomenal ball skills/tracking ability, and his body control makes him a dangerous threat in 50/50 situations (85.7% contested catch rate). He can win downfield and is an ascending route runner that will complement fellow Buckeye Terry McLaurin well on the outside.
