Vikings vs. Titans Prediction, Odds & Expert Picks: NFL Preseason Week 3

Both the Minnesota Vikings and Tennessee Titans will debut new quarterbacks this season, but the matchup between them on Friday, August 22, at 8 p.m. ET (CBS) won’t feature one side’s starter. We dive into the odds to dish out our Vikings vs. Titans prediction for the nationally televised contest at Nissan Stadium.
Before we tackle our NFL preseason Week 3 predictions, remember that these games are more about evaluating players and less about actually winning the game. Players may have a ton of motivation, but it’s not up to them whether they take the field. For instance, quarterback J.J. McCarthy won’t play for the Vikings this week. Tennessee is favored by 2.5 points at -110 odds at our best sports betting sites.

Home-field advantage doesn’t move the needle often during the NFL preseason, but when a team’s first overall rookie quarterback is making his debut in front of a home crowd, it surely means something. That’s the situation Cam Ward will find himself in on Friday.
I expect the Titans to have a productive first few drives with Ward under center, which gives them a leg up over a Vikings squad that will open with Sam Howell and an injury-riddled receiving corps. From there, the Titans have seasoned backup quarterbacks in Brandon Allen and Trevor Siemian, while the Vikings have undrafted rookie Max Brosmer and Brett Rypien.
Evaluating the market at our best sports betting apps also affects this wager. DraftKings has set its line at -115 for -2.5 points. That’s the same price Caesars is charging for -4, while FanDuel is charging -120 for -3.5. Getting under the key number of 3 for the same price (or better) is too good of a deal to pass up. Just don’t lose your head and forget that this is still the preseason!

💰 Vikings vs. Titans best bet

🔒 Titans by 1-13 points ⭐⭐⭐

The same projections-based reasoning as above extends to this wager, but the logic is a bit different in terms of price. With this wager, we’re adding Titans by 1 and Titans by 2 to our profitable range of outcomes – but we’re sacrificing Titans by anything more than 13 to do so. In exchange, we gain just over 8 percentage points of implied probability, according to our odds converter.
In Week 1, 10 of 16 preseason games stayed within 13 points. In Week 2, nine of 16 preseason games did so. Some teams, like the New York Giants, accounted for two such wins in that sample. The Titans’ lone preseason win came by three points, and the Vikings’ lone preseason loss came by eight.
The Titans probably don’t have the depth necessary to blow the doors off the Vikings, even if they do get a hot start from Ward. For a slightly better payout – and the benefit of the Titans needing only to outscore the Vikings by one – this wager may be a better way to get exposure to the Titans than betting on them to cover the spread.
