When handicapping NFL preseason games, an understanding of the quarterback depth chart is crucial. You never really know how long the starters will play, so if you’re relying on the first two signal-callers to cash your ticket, you’ll be in for a bad time if the third option is truly terrible.

The Giants may have the deepest quarterback room in the NFL. That isn’t exactly a compliment, but it’s good news for the preseason. Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, and Tommy DeVito all have played real regular-season reps. Meanwhile, Jaxson Dart has a first-round pedigree and plenty of practice reps.

On the other hand, the Jets are thin at quarterback. With the injury to Tyrod Taylor, they’re down to Justin Fields, Adrian Martinez, and Brady Cook. Martinez, who went undrafted in 2023, is a preseason veteran but a stranger to regular-season action, while Cook is a banged-up undrafted rookie.

The Jets scored 30 last week, but they needed help from a pair of Green Bay Packers fumbles that turned into 10 points and a layup drive that started at Green Bay’s own 45-yard line. The Giants should win and cover.

The Jets likely roll out Fields for a drive or two before inserting Martinez. The Giants could roll with Wilson for a drive, or they could just give Dart the nod. Winston didn’t enter until the second half in Week 1. I take any combination of Wilson, Dart, and Winston over Fields and Martinez - easily. A field goal first-half spread underestimates the significance of the Giants’ advantage at the position.

The Giants’ quarterback advantage will only be magnified by their scary and deep defensive front. Last week, the team forced a pair of early punts from the Buffalo Bills, holding them to 10 points.

The Jets stymied the Packers last week, but their early success stemmed largely from a now-injured Sauce Gardner, who broke up two passes and made a tackle on Green Bay’s opening three-and-out. With him sidelined, the Giants are far likelier to cash in on their ever-important opening possessions, and they should end the first half with at least a field-goal advantage.
