The revamped Chicago Bears host the Buffalo Bills at Soldier Field tonight at 8 p.m. ET (FOX) in Ben Johnson’s second game as the team's new head coach.

The Bears are going to play “everyone,” according to head coach Ben Johnson. That’s a major change from Week 1 of the preseason. While it’s unclear how long they’ll play, they should get one or two possessions.

On the other side, the Bills probably won’t give the starters much of a run.

When asked about whether Josh Allen would play, head coach Sean McDermott said that he “really uses practice” to evaluate Allen, who has attempted 17 passes in four games over the last three preseasons.

Chicago’s willingness to roll with the starters should give them an edge early, especially as Johnson tries to feel out the running game behind the rebuilt offensive line.

With the Bills surrendering 10 points in their first three possessions last week, the Bears should get out to a lead.

Things will get more complicated when the starters exit, but the Bears got two touchdown drives from third-string quarterback Case Keenum last week, along with 10 points while Tyson Bagent was under center.

Most of the above arguments apply to this bet, but it’s worth emphasizing why betting on the Bears early is smarter than playing the full-game spread.

Chicago’s reserves could easily cough up the advantage the starters build over whoever Buffalo trots out, so playing this pick reduces that risk.

For the Bears, it’s likely Caleb Williams-Tyson Bagent under center in the first half. Williams will have the full first-string offense at his disposal. For the Bills, it’s likely Mitch Trubisky-Mike White throwing mostly to reserves.

While they’re both solid backup quarterback options, they don’t give Buffalo enough of an edge versus Chicago’s defense.

Sunday’s game will be a key test for Johnson as he gears up for his first season at the helm of an NFL team, and it sounds like his players and staff have a lot more to prove on Sunday than this battle-tested, veteran Bills roster.
