Champions League SGP predictions: Man City vs. Inter

Man City moneyline (-210)

City are regarded as the best team in world football, even the Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi labelled them as that on Friday. They haven’t lost a single game in this season’s Champions League competition and have won every match at home, including a 7-0 victory over RB Leipzig, a 3-0 win against Bayern Munich and the impressive 4-0 mauling of reigning European champions Real Madrid at the Etihad in the semifinals.

Since the start of the campaign, they’ve scored 31 goals and conceded five. City striker Erling Haaland has scored 12 Champions League goals this season for Manchester City. He’s failed to score in his last two appearances in the competition, never going three consecutive games without a goal.

Not only do they have the competition’s leading scorer, but they also have Kevin De Bruyne whose six assists lead the tournament. Each team will make it difficult for the other to score, so I’m backing City’s superior quality in a closely contested game.

Under 2.5 goals (+108)

Inter have kept eight clean sheets in 12 Champions League matches this season, including five of their six knockout stage games. They could equal the record for most clean sheets in the knockout stages of a single edition of the tournament (6).

Inzaghi is a tournament specialist and he’s made his side hard to beat throughout this campaign. After losing their opening group game, Inter have suffered just one loss in 11 games since; both defeats came against Bayern Munich. They qualified from a group that included Barcelona. The Italian has a 100% record as head coach in cup finals with Lazio and Inter.

The Inter goalkeeper, Andre Onana, has prevented the most goals in the Champions League this season; nine conceded from 16.8 xG on target. City haven’t conceded more than one goal in any of their European matches this term.

It’s been five years since more than two goals have been scored in a Champions League final. The last three ended 1-0.

Man City Over 2.5 cards (+250)

Inter Over 2.5 cards (+102)

We’re going to thank the books for these fantastic odds. In the two European finals this year (both featuring Italian teams) we’ve had no fewer than four yellow cards per side. These occasions are tense, and teams try every trick in the book to slow down the pace of games and stop any momentum for the opposition.

Inter are hard to break down. As soon as City appear to be dominating possession, the Italian side will break it up with fouls and trickery. Inter Milan will want to run the clock down as best they can. Any slight touch from a Man City player, we’ll see Inzaghi’s men rolling on the floor and drawing a card from the referee.

The refs are in the spotlight and will adhere to the rules as best they can. They’ll take no prisoners and will punish players to maintain some form of order on the field. Whatever the card total was, I was always taking the Over. The more Manchester City get frustrated, the more likely they’re to be booked. It’s going to be very tight, and it could be very ugly.
