Now that we finally have the full NFL schedule release for the 2026-27 season, we can circle our calendars for some of the best matchups of the season - not between teams, but the actual stars on the field.
This year's NFL schedule release features plenty of superstars going head-to-head like Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Patrick Surtain II. So with the full schedule revealed, I'm breaking down the five best star matchups this year, plus five rookie showdowns I can't wait for.
⭐ 5 best NFL star player matchups
This list excludes matchups between division opponents and avoids doubling up by not listing the same NFL superstar more than once.
Week 2 - Ja'Marr Chase, WR, Bengals vs. Derek Stingley Jr., CB, Texans
Ja'Marr Chase taking on Derek Stingley Jr. in Week 2 might be the No. 1 matchup between a wide receiver and a cornerback this season. The former LSU teammates have both earned first-team All-Pro honors in back-to-back seasons and have a combined seven Pro Bowls between them.
Chase is on an all-time tear right now with 100-plus receptions in three straight seasons while totaling 4,336 receiving yards and 32 touchdowns since 2023. As for Stingley, he's allowed just a 63.5 QB rating when targeted the past four seasons while racking up 39 forced incompletions and 17 interceptions for one of the league's premier defenses.
There's an argument to be made that this is the NFL's best wide receiver going up against the NFL's best cornerback. Chase had five receptions for 124 yards and a score the last time the Cincinnati Bengals played the Houston Texans (2023).
Week 2 - Tristan Wirfs, OT, Buccaneers vs. Myles Garrett, EDGE, Browns
Personally, this is my favorite star matchup of the 2026-27 season. It's a future Hall of Famer in Myles Garrett coming off the most dominant season of his career (NFL-record 23 sacks and his second NFL DPOY), and he's doing battle with Tristan Wirfs, who's on a Hall of Fame trajectory as one of the most athletically gifted offensive linemen we've ever seen.
Garrett's bringing 125.5 career sacks, two DPOYs, seven All-Pros, and the single-season NFL sack record to the table. Wirfs owns five Pro Bowls, three All-Pros, and has allowed just two sacks and 36 pressures over the last two seasons.
This will be the first time Garrett plays against Wirfs since 2022, and in that matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the seven-time NFL Pro Bowler came away with 1.5 sacks and the win.
Wirfs also matches up with Micah Parsons (Week 4) and Aidan Hutchinson (Week 11) this season.
Week 4 - Puka Nacua, WR, Rams vs. Quinyon Mitchell, CB, Eagles
Puka Nacua and Quinyon Mitchell both turn just 25 years old this year, and are already two of the best players in the NFL. This is the third time the two will face off, after they saw each other in the regular season and postseason during Mitchell's rookie season, when he helped lead the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl.
In those two matchups, the ultra-productive Nacua combined for 12 receptions for 214 yards. However, after an up-and-down showing against the Los Angeles Rams in the regular-season matchup, Mitchell allowed just one reception for four yards in the postseason rematch.
Last season, both players earned first-team All-Pro nods, with Nacua leading the league in yards per route run (3.57) and first-down receptions (97), and Mitchell finishing in the top five in forced incompletions (16) and QB rating allowed by a cornerback (54.4).
Week 6 (TNF) - Jaxon Smith-Njigba, WR, Seahawks vs. Patrick Surtain II, CB, Broncos
The reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year going up against the 2024 NFL Defensive Player of the Year is as good as it gets for a wide receiver vs. a cornerback.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba just led the NFL in receiving yards (1,793) while finishing second in yards per route run (3.42) and first-down receptions (90). And Patrick Surtain II has given up only four touchdowns over the last two seasons (2,000-plus snaps) while allowing less than a 74.5 QB rating when targeted.
These are two of the smoothest and most technically sound players at their position in recent memory, and you know you have to be locked in when it's two guys who have killer acronym nicknames. The last time JSN played PS2's Denver Broncos, he was held to just two receptions for 19 yards.
Week 16 - Jordan Mailata, OT, Eagles vs. Will Anderson Jr., EDGE, Texans
This is almost a two-for-one, with the best offensive tackle duo in the NFL, Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson, taking on the best edge rusher pairing in the league, Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter. It's two of the best players in the pros at premium positions in Mailata and Anderson, and two veterans with Hall of Fame resumes in Johnson and Hunter.
It's going to be mesmerizing when the 6-foot-8, 365-pound Mailata goes punch-for-punch with the explosive and violent Anderson, who just earned first-team All-Pro for the first time in his career. Anderson led the NFL in pressures and pass-rush win rate (25.5%) in 2025, while Mailata has allowed just four sacks in the past two seasons.
Their counterparts are just as impressive, with Johnson and Hunter earning a combined 11 Pro Bowls. Johnson is arguably the greatest right tackle in NFL history, and has allowed just six sacks over his last seven seasons, while Hunter is coming off a 15-sack, 92-pressure season and has the sixth-most career sacks among active players (114.5).

🍼 5 must-watch rookie matchups
This list includes matchups between rookies in the same division because it's the first time we'll see them against each other.
Week 4 - Kadyn Proctor, OG, Dolphins vs. Caleb Banks, IDL, Vikings
Maybe this isn't the biggest rookie matchup in terms of star power, but it's the biggest in terms of sheer size. This is a battle between two kaijus who possess unbelievable athleticism ... it's almost like Godzilla vs. Kong in real life.
Kadyn Proctor, whom the Miami Dolphins are moving to guard, is 6-foot-6 (96th percentile), 352 pounds (97th percentile) with a 32 1/2" vertical jump (92nd percentile). Caleb Banks is 6-foot-6 (98th percentile), 327 pounds (89th percentile) with 35" arms (94th percentile) and a 114" broad jump (92nd percentile).
While both had major questions as draft prospects, there's no questioning how jaw-dropping it is to see mammoth men move as they do, and it's especially eye-popping when you get to see linemen built like this smash into each other for four quarters. Will Proctor's power and explosiveness be enough to stop Banks' twitch and length? Tune in when the Dolphins play the Vikings in Week 4.
This isn't Proctor's only must-see matchup either; Miami plays the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 3, meaning he'll take on first-round defensive tackle Peter Woods.
Week 5 - Spencer Fano, OT, Browns vs. David Bailey, EDGE, Jets
We can all agree that the New York Jets vs. Cleveland Browns might not have the most juice among Week 5 games, but it will pit two top-10 picks against each other. And it's always fun when the first offensive tackle selected takes on the first pass rusher selected.
There's no shortage of explosiveness between Spencer Fano and David Bailey, either. Fano's athleticism was on full display throughout the NFL Scouting Combine, both in drills and when he tested in the 96th percentile for the 40-yard dash (4.91) and 93rd percentile for the 3-cone (7.34). Those movement skills will be needed to slow Bailey, who was in the 96th percentile with his 40-yard dash (4.50) and broad jump (129").
Fano didn't allow a sack last season at Utah (he hasn't allowed one since Aug. 29, 2024), and gave up just five pressures. Will Bailey get one against him? The former Texas Tech star led the nation in sacks last season (14.5), was No. 2 nationally in pressures (81), and was in the top 10 in the Power Four in pass rush win rate (21.6%).
Fano isn't the only first-round rookie offensive tackle Bailey will potentially see, either, with the Jets taking on the Detroit Lions (Blake Miller) in Week 3 and the New England Patriots (Caleb Lomu) in Week 6 and Week 16. And Fano also faces other first-round pass rushers in Week 2 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Rueben Bain Jr.) and in Week 7 against the Tennessee Titans (Keldric Faulk).
Week 7 (MNF) & Week 12 (Thanksgiving) - Makai Lemon, WR, Eagles vs. Caleb Downs, DB, Cowboys
The best divisional rookie matchup of the 2026 season comes when two classic rivals meet, and we should see plenty of reps between Makai Lemon and Caleb Downs. The Philadelphia Eagles are set to deploy Lemon predominantly in the slot, and it appears that new Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker will be using Caleb Downs in the Cooper DeJean role, meaning he'll mainly be playing nickel.
That means in both Week 7 and Week 12, when the Eagles and Cowboys clash, we will see Lemon and Downs match up, in prime time and on Thanksgiving, no less. It's hard to top this matchup in terms of rookie wide receiver vs. rookie defensive back after Lemon won the Biletnikoff Award for college football's top wide receiver and Downs took home the Thorpe Award for college football's top defensive back.
These are two of the highest-IQ rookies taking the field this season, too, with Lemon frequently dissecting coverages to find holes in zone or win leverage, and Downs being known as a QB on the field with his cover instincts and route recognition.
At USC last season, Lemon was top 10 nationally in yards per route run (3.13), missed tackles forced on receptions (21), and first down catches (50). At Ohio State the last two years, Downs didn't allow a single touchdown and held opposing passers to a QB rating below 53.5. Get your popcorn ready.
Week 11 - Blake Miller, OT, Lions vs. Rueben Bain Jr., DL, Buccaneers
One of the most polarizing prospects in the 2026 NFL Draft, Bain could see as many as four first-round rookie offensive tackles in his first season in the league. The Buccaneers play the Browns (Fano), Carolina Panthers (Monroe Freeling), and Pittsburgh Steelers (Max Iheanachor), but his matchup against Miller and the Lions is the one I'm most excited to watch.
The big knock on Bain coming out of Miami was his T-Rex arms, with 1st percentile arm length (30 7/8"), which played a role in him falling to the 15th pick. Well, Miller has no shortage of length, measuring in with 34 1/4" arms, to complement athleticism that helped him test in the 90th percentile for broad jump (113") and 87th percentile for vertical jump (32").
Miller's also among the most experienced rookie offensive linemen, starting over 50 games at Clemson and earning a reputation for his physical playing style while allowing just three sacks over his final two seasons. Bain has a similar reputation, winning with violence and power that helped him lead the country in pressures (83) and rank top 10 nationally in pass rush win rate (23.5%).
This is going to be a war on every rep between two of the toughest rookies you'll see in 2026.
Week 12 - Jeremiyah Love, RB, Cardinals vs. Sonny Styles, LB, Commanders
Two top-10 picks and top-five players on the consensus big board for the 2026 NFL Draft, Jeremiyah Love vs. Sonny Styles, could be the most electric rookie matchup of the season. Both are coming off unanimous All-American selections and are freak athletes with All-Pro ceilings.
Love's a walking big-play, ranking top 10 in college football in rushing yards after contact (896), 10-plus-yard runs (39), and breakaway rate (52.9%) last season. And he's an elite receiving back who will likely be a featured piece of the Arizona Cardinals' passing game.
Meanwhile, Styles is one of the scariest height-weight-speed athletes to come into the NFL at linebacker - he's 6-foot-5, 244 pounds with a 99th percentile vertical jump (43 1/2") and 96th percentile 40-yard dash (4.46). Plus, he missed just two tackles in 2025.
This isn't the first time Love and Styles will meet; they played in the College Football Playoff National Championship game in 2024 and in a regular-season matchup in 2023. Both times, Styles and Ohio State took down Love and Notre Dame. Love also has a matchup with Styles's linebacker mate at Ohio State when the Cardinals play Arvell Reese and the New York Giants in Week 4.
