“It’s a lie that you continue to tell,” Herring tells Sports Illustrated.
A story by Robbi Pickeral published in The News & Observer in 2009, just before Jordan's induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame, was one attempt to set the record straight.
In that story Pickeral quoted Ruby Sutton, who called it her pet peeve to hear the story of Jordan being "cut" from the Laney High varsity basketball team as a sophomore, and of that event spurring him to greatness.
"Back then, (most) 10th-graders played JV; that's just the way it was. Nobody ever 'cut' Michael Jordan, " Sutton said then, shaking her head as she retold the story for at least the 100th time.

              It's very simple

He was trying out for the varsity team and didnt make it, ie got cut. He ended up playing on the JV team. Call it whatever you want. It's pretty remarkable that the best of all time didnt play varsity as a sophomore.

Continue to believe whatever you want. Those are facts.

                        Basketball and baseball

I'd have played golf if I couldn't make the baseball team
i really should've stuck with golf. but 22 years ago there was no possibility of making $1 million being the 120th best golfer in the world.

my sister lives right next door to ryan palmer, most people haven't even heard of the guy yet he has $13 million in career earnings, probably that much again in endorsements

Golf is the most mental sport of all

I know a guy who played on tour for a few years and had to leave because he got developed a muscle relaxer addiction. Hearing him talk about the pressure is unreal.

                              What is funny is,

grown men arguing who the greatest NBA player is,

mostly because of your own misgivings as athletes.....

Michael Jordan has so many awards and achievements in his career Lebron would have to play until he is 60 just to get half of what MJ has.

Continue to believe whatever you want. Those are facts.
He was not cut. You don't "try out" for the varsity team, you try out to be in the program, whether you are placed on varsity, JV, or freshman if you are a freshmen. Because he was put on the JV team instead of varsity does not mean he was cut in any way.

I agree MJ is the best player ever. I also think Lebron may eclipse him. The stats you give for MJ are his entire career and Lebron is just getting into his prime. Show me the roster players on cleveland that compared to Jordans squads when he won his six.

They both won their first titles at the same age (27)
No one is saying Wade is not a great player. However saying Jordan was alone is false because Pippen was ALL WORLD back then also.

Players now are ten times stronger & faster then at any other time. If you just dropped a player like Kevin Durant from our current era into the 1960's or 1970's he would be COMPLETELY unstoppable. That does not mean that the best players are all from our era because you have to factor in the different eras.

Babe ruth dropped into the year 2013 couldnt make a ML roster yet he is the best player of all time in baseball. You know why babe ruth is the best baseball player ever? He would hit 50+ home runs and no one else would hit 20. Not to mention he was the best pitcher of his era! That is what makes someone the greatest just CRUSHING their own era. That is an argument that favors Wilt Chamberlain in the NBA. Some of his years were SO SO dominant in the NBA stat wise.

Even the "Jordan has six rings argument" is not sound, hell Robery Horry has seven rings in the modern era. It is a team sport and without significant help NOBODY can win a ring. Like some other guys have mentioned there are several players with ten and eleven rings and some are not even in the conversation with MJ lebron Kobe, Wilt, Kareem, Magic, West. robertson, russell, ( thats bill not westbrook for you young bucks LOL ) etc etc

I will say this if you say the best ever are

                                                  1. Lebron
                                                  2 Jordan
                                                  3 Kobe

You are probably just dating yourself as a younger fan.

Push comes to shove gun to my head who do I THINK is the best ever? Probably Jordan, and Lebron could SOMEDAY could eclipse him, but not yet.

                                                  very solid post.

I often struggle with the comparing stars from other eras conundrum.

I've come to the same conclusion as you for the most part. you measure how the player measured up vs his peers.

you can't easily compare what Oscar Robertson did as a rookie in 1960 or what Wilt was doing in 1961 to Larry Bird in the mid 80's to Lebron now. The pace of the NBA game was so much more ridiculously faster, but the athletes and the pool of players today is so much ridiculously bigger and better.

even in Jordan's time the pace was alot faster in the NBA. the 2013 version of the NBA is far far far removed from the 80's version

LOL @ everyone talking about Pippen and Wade but no one mentions 8 time all star Chris Bosh....Jordan had one time all star Horace Grant before rodman got there

Also statistically wade is WAAAAAAY better than pippen....in fact wade has the 6th best PER of all time

                                                        don't forget Tony Kukoc

he was always one of my favorite players. I think he would be on the all time under-rated team

                                                              in the regular season

sort of the anti-lebron....best reg season record two years running in cleveland and didnt do dick in the playoffs

We can keep arguing....Both players are unreal talents in different ways and I guess Lebron will need to do more in his career to truly be considered the greatest ever

But talent wise, I don't think it's crazy at all to compare the two at this point.....Jordan backers get all offended that this is even a discussion, and I don't get that at all
