The NHL takes a bit of a breather this weekend with a single-digit slate for Saturday. 

The Ducks and Flyers kick things off in Philadelphia at 1 p.m. ET, with the Golden Knights and Kings facing off in a divisional clash to close out the schedule at 10:30 p.m. ET.

Jets ML vs. Canadiens (-140 via BetMGM)  ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Jets and Canadiens, though initially having similar records at the start of the season, find themselves on vastly different trajectories. Winnipeg anticipates a playoff berth, reflecting their higher aspirations and competitive roster, while Montreal remains in a rebuilding phase, aiming to develop their team for the future rather than contending for immediate success.

The Jets have now won three straight after a sluggish start, including two road victories. The Habs are playing well recently too, with wins in three of their last four games.

The Jets are performing much better than the Habs when you look a bit deeper. Winnipeg boasts the 12th-best xGF%, while Montreal has produced the ninth-worst at 48.29%.

Winnipeg is simply the better team and -140 is way too low of a line.

Maple Leafs ML vs. Predators (-142 via DraftKings) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Maple Leafs are now up to 5-2-0 through seven games after a pair of wins and two losses to begin the season.

Toronto has been able to keep its opponents off the board with just one goal against in each of the last two games. In fact, the Leafs haven’t allowed more than three goals in any of their last four contests.

Toronto would likely be a more significant favorite if it wasn’t for Ilya Samsonov starting in net. He’s dealing with some struggles and it’s showing. He is 2-1-0 this season with a 4.34 GAA and .831 SV%. 

Still, the Maple Leafs boast the talent to get past the Predators in Nashville.

Saturday’s NHL game picks

Rangers-Canucks Under 6 (-105 via BetRivers) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Rangers are getting some great early-season results under new head coach Peter Laviolette. The Blueshirts have won the first three games on their current road trip, and four of their last five contests overall. They’re doing that despite some low-scoring games.

New York has only allowed seven goals in its last four matchups. It’s not like the Rangers are scoring too much either with 13 goals in those games, and more than three goals in a contest just once.

Meanwhile, Vancouver is coming off a 5-0 shutout win over St. Louis on Friday night. The Canucks have allowed five goals in their last three games and 11 in across the club's previous five.

Overall, the Rangers allow the second-fewest goals in the league at 1.86 per game, with the Canucks the fourth-best at 2.14.

Cole Caufield Over 0.5 power-play points (+160 via BetMGM) ⭐⭐⭐

Montreal Canadiens forward Cole Caufield is off to a pretty good start to the season with nine points in seven games, and five have come on the power play.

Caufield has recorded power-play points in each of his last two outings and three of his last four overall. The Canadiens have scored on the power play in four straight games too (5-for-18 overall).

The Jets didn’t allow a power-play goal to the Red Wings (two chances) for the first time in a game during 2023-24. Their penalty-kill unit is the 10th-worst in the league at 74.1%.
