First Touchdown Scorer Predictions for Thursday Night Football Week 9
The Houston Texans (6-2) enter Thursday night as 2.5-point underdogs to the New York Jets (2-6) on Thursday Night Football in Week 9. Can Aaron Rodgers and his team do enough to justify this spread?
Week 9 kicks off at 8:15 p.m. ET from MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
In this week’s first touchdown scorer predictions for Thursday Night Football, I am targeting an offensive threat in Houston that has played a major role in his first season with the team.
I’m also looking at a tight end in New York that should be in line to pick up the slack for an injured wide receiver that will miss tonight’s game.
First touchdown predictions are tricky. On Monday night, we learned the hard way when our George Pickens call was almost correct twice over and yet called back (once by a penalty and once by an overturned call). Hopefully, the refs will keep their flags in their pockets and our receivers will tap their toes this week and let us cash some tickets.
We also have some extra plays in our Week 9 NFL predictions, like our Texans vs. Jets prediction.

Texans first touchdown scorer prediction: Joe Mixon, RB ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Best odds: +430 via FanDuel | Implied probability: 18.87%
Mixon leads the Texans with six total touchdowns despite missing three games this season. He has crossed the goal line in all but one of his five games this year.
Over the last three games since his return, 55.6% of Houston’s touchdowns have come via the running game. This is a sharp increase from their 42.1% season average. The Texans have found the end zone nine times in the last three weeks, and Mixon is responsible for five.
The Jets have allowed three touchdowns to the running back position in their last two matchups. Overall, 58.8% of the touchdowns scored against the New York defense have been on the ground, which is the second-highest average in the league.
I expect the Texans to pound the ball on the ground often to avoid testing a Jets pass defense that is allowing the second-fewest passing yards per game (161.1) this season.
Jets first touchdown scorer prediction: Tyler Conklin, TE ⭐⭐⭐
Best odds: +2000 via FanDuel | Implied probability: 4.76%
Conklin enters Thursday having scored a touchdown in each of his last two games.
The veteran tight end is the Jets’ fourth-most targeted pass catcher (38). His quarterback has looked his way five times in the red zone this year. He has caught three of them, converting two into six points.
New York wideout Allen Lazard is set to miss this game. The former Packer has scored three touchdowns in ten red zone targets this season. I anticipate Conklin is next in line to pick up some of those vacated targets.
You may not want to temper your expectations here though, the Jets have only scored the first touchdown in three out eight chances this season.
However, if this does hit, you will have turned your $10 investment into a $200 profit.
