The Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions meet for a rematch of a game that featured one of the most controversial endings of the year last season.

The Cowboys have won two games in a row, but they’re home underdogs against the Lions this week. My best Lions vs. Cowboys prediction asks whether we should really back a road favorite against a solid team.

The Cowboys will be without multiple defensive pieces, including Micah Parson and DeMarcus Lawrence. Trevon Diggs also didn’t practice on Thursday due to an illness. Will the Lions’ high-powered offense take advantage of these absences and do enough to outscore Dak Prescott and company?

When I first saw this spread, my initial reaction was to take the Cowboys. The Lions haven’t looked crisp offensively this season, and the defense just gave up a lot of yards and points to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 4. Plus, the Cowboys feel like one of those teams that should always be favored at home.

Lions hold key advantages

However, looking further into the game, the Lions have an advantage in numerous key areas. First of all, their rushing attack is going to dominate this game. The combination of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery has the Lions as the seventh-ranked rushing attack in the league. The Cowboys are allowing 135.0 rushing yards per game.

Injuries are also huge. While the Cowboys are losing players, the Lions are getting healthier. The Lions will have Brian Branch back, and his presence will be enough to prevent Prescott from having a huge game. Jared Goff won’t feel much pressure if the Lions do fall behind, as his offensive line stands up to backups.

Finally, the Lions are coming off their bye week. The timing works out for them. The spread opened at 3, then briefly grew to 3.5 before dropping to 3 again. I expect it to stay here before kickoff, though I wouldn’t be opposed to taking Detroit -3.5 in this game.

David Montgomery Over 57.5 rushing yards (-110) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The only thing keeping this from being a five-star play is that Montgomery splits the backfield with Gibbs. This is a great matchup for Montgomery, and last year, he ran for 65 yards against the Cowboys despite only carrying the ball 14 times.

The Cowboys allow 4.4 yards per attempt this season, and Montgomery averages more than 15 carries per game. He should hit the Over even if he only hits his season averages. But in this game, with all the injuries to the Cowboys, he will easily beat those averages.

The total is set at 56.5 at FanDuel, but the price is -114. The price isn’t much better at BetMGM for over 57.5 yards, but I’m so confident in Montgomery hitting this Over that I’ll take the higher total for the better price.
