I can understand why this spread has reached double digits: the Aces are the two-time champions and one of the favorites by the WNBA championship odds, and they're coming off a blowout win. The Sky are mired in a six-game spell after a 79-74 loss to the Minnesota Lynx.
That would all compel me more if we hadn't just seen these teams face off just over a week ago, when the Aces needed a buzzer-beater from presumptive MVP A'ja Wilson to narrowly survive a 77-75 final in Chicago:
Aces averse to blowouts
While the two-time defending champions made a habit of blowing out opponents over the last two seasons, they've struggled mightily to pull away in 2024.
Las Vegas' 18-point win over the Phoenix Mercury on Sunday marked its second win by more than 11 points in eight games since the Olympic break, during which it's suffered more outright losses (four) than double-digit wins (three).
Meanwhile, Chicago's blowout loss to the Indiana Fever on Friday was its only result decided by more than five points over its last five games.
On the season, the Aces have outscored the Sky by eight points per game, and these teams just played to the final horn last week. That's why I'm taking the points in this matchup until Las Vegas shows it deserves such a gaudy number.
