The Players Championship returns to TPC Sawgrass with Scottie Scheffler set as the betting favorite based on The Players Championship odds from our best golf betting sites, as we make our picks on the top Players Championship props and matchups.

After an impressive win TPC Sawgrass in 2023, Scottie Scheffler is looking to defend his title at The Players Championship for the first time in the event’s 50-year history.

The world No. 1 has plenty of momentum to ride after winning by five strokes against the field on Sunday during the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, separating himself from the rest of the leaderboard early with a flood of birdies. While Scheffler’s putting woes ended with a change to a mallet-head putter, this event is extremely difficult to win based on the layout of TPC Sawgrass.

Of the 144 golfers in this field - more than double the number of players who qualified last week - other favorites include former Players Championship winners Rory McIlroy at +1400 and Justin Thomas at +2200. McIlroy is featured in our Players Championship picks.

With such a large field, there's a higher probability of a player with longer odds seizing an outright win. That's a trend we’ve seen in most PGA Tour events thus far in 2024, and we're targeting those players with our Players Championship sleeper picks.

Here are our picks for the top Players Championship props and matchups based on the odds from our best sports betting sites.

Andrew Novak to finish top 20 (+500 via FanDuel) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Novak is amongst the hottest ball-strikers on the PGA Tour right now. Novak ranks fourth in strokes gained: approach, plus fourth for SG: tee-to-green and sixth in SG: around-the-green.

After missing three consecutive cuts to start 2024, Novak has been dialed in, producing finishes of T-8, T-8, and T-9 since the WM Phoenix Open. Now, he’s prepared to avenge his missed cut at TPC Sawgrass from a year ago, which is why we’re landing +500 odds on Novak for a top 20 finish.

It’s worth putting a unit on Novak at such an attractive number, as he’s poised to continue his quality play with at least a T-20 finish this week at The Players Championship.

Adam Hadwin to be top Candian (+350 via FanDuel) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Hadwin has enjoyed great success at TPC Sawgrass over the years, producing T-15 finishes in back-to-back appearances. The Canadian is set to tee it off after a lackluster T-52 finish at plus-6 during the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

We’re hitting the Top in Region betting market and investing in Hadwin to be the top Canadian golfer in a field loaded with talent from the country up north. He’s the second favorite behind Corey Conners in this market. Conners missed the cut at TPC Sawgrass last year, while Hadwin finished T-13.

At +350 odds, he’s the prospect we need to place a one-unit wager on to return value ahead of Thursday’s opening round.

Players Championship matchups

Si Woo Kim vs. Group E (+280 via FanDuel) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Kim has four career wins, including the 2017 Players Championship, so he’ll be comfortable in his return to TPC Sawgrass. We’ve seen Kim outside of the top 25 for two consecutive events, although he’s logged two top-15 finishes and four top-25 finishes in seven events this season.

Kim is grouped with Russell Henley (+270), Min Woo Lee (+330), Tom Kim (+400), and Sungjae Im (+400) in Group E on FanDuel. He’s the second favorite at +280 behind Henley, who has been playing well, including a T-19 finish at this event in 2023. Kim didn’t finish far behind at T-27, which is likely why our best sports betting sites have set this line so tight between these two prospects.

At +280 odds, we’re landing good value on Kim, who is due to make a return inside the top 25 at The Players Championship. Henley is a threat, along with Im, who finished T-6 a year ago, but the latter’s performance thus far in 2024 has been less than stellar. Let’s stake a unit on Kim to return to form with his irons, as he's ranked 31st in SG: approach and 18th off the tee this season.

Round 1 matchup: Andrew Novak vs. Garrick Higgo + S.H. Kim (+140 via FanDuel) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Betting 3-ball matchups is a great way to invest in the opening round of a golf event, especially one like The Players Championship. We’re going back to the well with Andrew Novak, only this time, the wait for payout is much shorter, assuming Novak wins his Round 1 matchup against Garrick Higgo and S.H. Kim.

We’ve talked about Novak’s stats on approach, tee-to-green, and around-the-green, but he’s also 10th for sand-save percentage, 30th for bogey avoidance, and 12th in hole proximity. Higgo has quality irons as well, but Novak is more of a complete player at the moment, while Kim is a distant third. That's why our best sports betting apps have Novak as the favorite to win his 3-ball matchup at +140 odds on Thursday.

Let’s stake our final unit on Novak to beat Higgo and Kim with the lowest score during Thursday’s opening round at The Players Championship.

How to bet on golf

Betting on golf involves understanding the various types of bets available and how to assess player performance. First, familiarize yourself with the different types of bets commonly offered in golf, including outright winner bets, each-way bets (which cover both a win and a top finish), head-to-head matchups between two players, and proposition bets on specific events within a tournament, such as hole-in-one occurrences or individual player performances on certain holes.

Once you've identified the types of bets you're interested in, research the players, course conditions, recent form, and other relevant factors that could influence outcomes. Pay attention to factors like player statistics, recent tournament performances, course history, and any injuries or changes in form that may affect a player's performance.
