The 49ers defeated the Seahawks twice during the regular season, 27-7 at home in September and then again up in Seattle, 21-13 in December. San Francisco covered the spread in both matchups.

The Niners finished at 11-6 against the spread for the season and tied for the best home cover rate in the NFL, going 7-2 ATS in home games. Seattle, meanwhile, wasn’t particularly strong for bettors on the road, going just 3-4 ATS as an away team. San Francisco’s league-leading scoring defense (16.3 PPG) since made it difficult for opposing sides to keep pace. In their wins, the Niners averaged a 16.7-point margin of victory.

Outside of a strange Week 17 performance against Jarrett Stidham and the Las Vegas Raiders, the 49ers didn’t allow an opponent to exceed 20 points against them since October. Seattle has only scored above 20 points once over its last four games. The 49ers, meanwhile, have scored 30-plus in five of their last six.

The anticipated weather doesn’t make me shy away from the far superior team in this matchup, but the potential for rain against a Pete Carroll-coached team does provide the avenue for an ugly game that keeps Seattle closer than it should be. Though 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is a question mark in his first-ever playoff game, head coach Kyle Shanahan knows how to deliver a game plan the rookie can execute. If he relies on his incredible cast of offensive skill players and league-best defense, the 49ers can roll in this one.
