A titanic clash between two of the best teams in baseball - and the top picks by the World Series odds - begins tonight when the Los Angeles Dodgers host the Philadelphia Phillies at 10:10 p.m. ET from Dodger Stadium (MLB Network).

The Dodgers are getting +500 odds to win the Fall Classic at our best MLB betting sites during these crucial final days of the regular season, with the Phillies only narrowly behind at +600.

But when we zoom in a little closer prior to this key late-season series that begins tonight and ends Wednesday, we see a favorite that's barely clinging to that status and a fast-rising challenger.

That's why if you're eyeing the World Series odds ahead of this Phillies vs. Dodgers series, it's time to make your MLB picks on Philadelphia now.

📈 World Series odds movement: How did the Phillies, Dodgers get here?

There's a mere sliver of space separating the two National League giants as this series gets underway. But it was a canyon to begin the season and still a mile wide as recently as Sept. 1.

The Dodgers occupied their own tier back at the end of spring training while far ahead of any challenger - the Phillies included. Their lead kept gradually narrowing, though even earlier this month Los Angeles still held a reasonably comfortable advantage as the favorite, largely due to the continued brilliance of MLB MVP odds front-runner Shohei Ohtani.

Now the Phillies get a chance to make their leap in this series, with the Dodgers facing a test on a few fronts. Here's a look at how the odds have shifted this season courtesy of SportsOddsHistory:

Date Dodgers Phillies
March 27 +240 +1100
May 1 +240 +1200
June 1 +240 +1000
July 1 +210 +900
All-Star break +220 +800
Aug. 1 +250 +850
Sept. 1 +350 +750
Sept. 15 +500 +600

The Phillies didn't even get below 10/1 betting odds until nearly midseason, whereas the Dodgers started from a perch high atop the league and only began to drift back in late August.

But what started as a pinhole leak has turned into a potential capsizing situation for the Dodgers atop these odds. They've gone a mediocre 21-19 since the beginning of August, with the Phillies going 28-14 throughout the same period.

The Dodgers' stretch of woe has included dropping a combined five games to the putrid Pittsburgh Pirates and Baltimore Orioles with a sweep at the hands of the former. The equally awful Los Angeles Angels also swept the Dodgers in August, and the laughably bad and MLB-worst Colorado Rockies earned a series split.

Meanwhile, the Phillies' temperature has been rising for a while, resulting in their odds to win the World Series moving from +800 at the All-Star break to now +600. They've won six of their last seven games heading into this massive matchup, most notably outscoring the rival New York Mets 26-10 during a pivotal four-game sweep to all but seal up their second straight NL East title.

🏆 Should you bet the Phillies to win the World Series?

This series could not only further shorten the Phillies' World Series odds and move them past the Dodgers, but it can also push Philadelphia that much closer to securing an all-important first-round playoff bye. And at this point in a marathon season, every day to recover and get key contributors back from injury is precious.

For the Phillies, that would mean more time for five-tool dynamo Trea Turner to be properly eased back into game action and get further rest as needed after recovering from a hamstring issue. Ditto for third baseman Alec Bohm.

Philly enters tonight a whopping 12 games up on the Mets in its division. However, the Dodgers still face a push from the San Diego Padres in the NL West.

Los Angeles is hoping to have the services of Roki Sasaki and Will Smith, among others, for the postseason. But the Dodgers hold only a 2.5-game lead in their division over the Padres and will likely be clawing until the very end. That would result in another significant disadvantage of being unable to optimally set their rotation heading into a short playoff series - which could prove fatal for the defending champs' season.

The Dodgers haven't been hurting for offense even amid their struggles, as they sit second MLB-wde in runs and third in OPS. However, their pitching has been faltering significantly, as the team's ERA of 4.04 rests at 18th while the Phillies sit seventh (3.83).

That chasm in pitching talent is a central reason why the two behemoths will continue on their opposite trajectories, resulting in further shortening World Series odds for the Phillies. Get in now.
