2024 Barracuda Championship Odds & Expert Pick: Mitchell Leads Alt Field to Tahoe

The PGA Tour's lone modified Stableford event of the season takes place this week at Tahoe Mountain Club in Truckee, Calif., with Keith Mitchell as the betting favorite by the Barracuda Championship odds from our best golf betting sites.

Akshay Bhatia used his playoff victory in last year's Barracuda Championship to propel him to bigger and better things, including an appearance in this week's British Open. Mitchell is being given the best chance (+1700) in this year's 156-man field of following suit.

It may seem obvious, but scoring is of the utmost importance this week. This is the PGA Tour's only event to follow a modified stableford scoring format, in which golfers are awarded points for their score on each hole. We need to see birdies, eagles, and better at the 7,480-yard par-71 venue.

I've made my British Open expert picks based on The Open Championship odds, and below we'll break down this week's alternate event.

Barracuda Championship picks: My first click

Taylor Pendrith (+2500)

Best odds: +2500 via BetMGM | Implied probability: 3.85%

Pendrith claimed his first career PGA Tour victory at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson earlier this season, and he took a couple weeks to rest after a disappointing T-72 finish in the Rocket Mortgage Classic. The Canadian tied for 16th in the U.S. Open before that, and I'm surprised he's not the betting favorite in this thin field.

He's making his fourth appearance in this event after a T-13 in 2021 followed by a T-11 before last year's missed cut. He's one of the best drivers in this field and has plenty of length for the long venue.

That length will let him attack Tahoe's drivable par 4s and set up more eagle opportunities.

Keith Mitchell (+1700)

Best odds: +1700 via bet365 | Implied probability: 5.56%

Mitchell enters the week at No. 84 in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), and he's vastly overpriced as the betting favorite, even in the weak field. Mitchell played this event for the first time last year and missed the cut. He also missed the cut in last week's Scottish Open, and Mitchell will need to combat the exhaustion of intercontinental travel while playing for the fourth straight week.

I'd pass on betting Mitchell outright regardless of the price, especially with a winning $10 bet returning a relatively modest profit of $170. The below list of past tournament champions shows we have a much better chance by targeting those with mid-range or longer odds this week.

Scoring format

The Barracuda Championship follows a modified stableford scoring format, with points awarded for a golfer's score on each hole.

• Double eagle = 8 points
• Eagle = 5 points
• Birdie = 2 points
• Par = 0 points
• Bogey = minus-1 point
• Double bogey (or worse) = minus-3 points

As such, bettors should be targeting risk-taking golfers who will give themselves the best chances of making eagle, or at least birdie most often. Good scores are much better rewarded than bad scores are penalized.
