What can North Carolina sports bettors wager on?

Legal sports betting couldn’t have come at a better time for North Carolina residents. Major League Baseball is set to open the season, the National Hockey League and National Basketball Association are inching closer to the playoffs, March Madness is ready to tip-off, and tentpole events for wrestling, golf, and mixed martial arts (MMA) are on the horizon.

Here’s a rundown of everything North Carolina sports bettors can wager on in the coming month.

College Basketball

There’s no better time of year for college hoops than March, and North Carolina sports bettors have a lot to look forward to over the next three weeks.

The Men’s Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Tournament will be played in Washington D.C. from March 12-16, and the tourney will feature Wake Forest and NC State along with heavyweights UNC and Duke. The latter two renewed their rivalry Saturday, and the Tar Heels prevailed 84-79 in a closely contested matchup.

Both teams are ranked inside the top 10 nationally, and we could get another matchup between the in-state rivals if they advance through the ACC Tournament.

Both teams are expected to make noise in the NCAA Men’s Tournament, which begins on March 19 with the first four and kicks off in earnest on March 22 with the first round. North Carolina is tied for the sixth-best odds to win the tournament after a strong 2023-24 campaign.

On the women’s side, Notre Dame won the ACC Tournament on March 10 with a victory over NC State. The ACC has only Duke and UNC in the top 25 on the men’s side, but the women sport Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, NC State, Syracuse and Louisville among ACC teams ranked inside the top 25.

With plenty of representation across both tournaments, sports bettors in North Carolina will have a plethora of available options when placing wagers on college basketball.

NBA

The Charlotte Hornets haven’t been eliminated from playoff contention yet, but they’re on the brink, and it’s almost a lock that they’ll miss the playoffs again. Charlotte has 18 games left on the schedule, and while they’ll be headed home for the postseason, 16 other NBA teams will be vying for a championship starting April 20.

The Play-In Tournament will run from April 16-19 to determine the final two playoff teams in each conference, and North Carolina sports bettors looking for even more action can bet on the winners of the Nos. 7-10 seeds.

NHL

North Carolina’s NBA team hasn’t been good in a while, but the same cannot be said of the state’s NHL team. With 18 games left in the regular season, the Carolina Hurricans sport a 39-19-6 record. The team is second in the Metropolitan Division, fourth in the Eastern Conference, and poised for a sixth straight playoff run.

The Hurricanes made the Eastern Conference Finals a season ago, marking the second time they advanced that far over the last five seasons. North Carolina sports bettors can wager on their hometown hockey team for the remainder of the regular season and when the NHL playoffs start on April 17. For bettors who enjoy wagering on futures, the Hurricanes are tied for the second-best odds to hoist the Stanley Cup.

PGA

Professional golf’s most iconic event tees off on April 14 at Augusta National, and North Carolina sports bettors can place their bets based on the latest Masters odds with props for outright winner, top 5, and top 10 finishes. The Players Championship runs from March 14-17, and golf fans in North Carolina can wager on it, too!

Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy headline the field of favorites to win The Players Championship and The Masters.

MMA

The UFC has multiple fights through the final weeks of March, but the next big event is April 13 for UFC 300 in Las Vegas.

The main event features Alex Pereira vs. Jamahal Hill, with Pereira favored to win. On the women’s side, Zhang Weili is a heavy favorite to defeat Yan Xiaonan. Avid MMA fans in North Carolina can place their bets early for the June 29 showdown between Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler.

McGregor will make his much-anticipated return to the Octagon after three years off. He hasn’t fought in the UFC since losing back-to-back fights to Dustin Poirier in January and July of 2021, but McGregor is the betting favorite to beat Chandler.

WWE

Wrestlemania 40 will be held from April 6-7 in Philadelphia and features notable matchups Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes for the WWE Universal Championship and Seth Rollins vs. Drew McIntyre for the World Heavyweight Championship. Not every book offers WWE wagering, but sports bettors in North Carolina can find at least one licensed operator that provides Wrestlemania 40 odds.
