So, here is my first play for tomorrow:

Nadia Petrova over Venus Williams at 3.42 (Betfair, with 5% commission included) 1 unit
    Probability of winning: ~ 40%

When you are playing against the Williams’ sisters it is essential that you have the belief that you can win. The two sisters have achieved so much in the last 10 years that many players pay too much respect to them and do not show their best when playing against them. Therefore, it is important to see how the head-to-head stats are before making any predictions. At first look, you will see that Venus has won all of the four matches that she has played with Petrova but the reality is that those matches were played long ago and have little predictive value. The four matches were played in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2007. In the last match, Petrova lost a tough three setter and actually won more games than Venus. It is also important to note that Petrova has won the last two meeting against Serena and both of those matches were played in the last year. Usually, the Williams’ sisters win their matches by overpowering their opponents, but Petrova has shown that she can handle their power. The wet conditions tomorrow won’t change anything as it will hurt both players equally because both are big hitters and rely a lot on their serves.

Caroline Wozniacki (-2) over Flavia Pennetta at 1.921 (Pinnacle) 1.1 units
    Probability of winning: ~ 60%

I think Wozniacki is the much better player and getting her at close to even odds with a minor handicap has a lot of value. The reason for the good price on Caroline is her poor performance during the clay court season, but she had an excuse. She turned her ankle in Charleston and after that she suffered losses to inferior players like Alona Bondarenko and Lucie Safarova. However, I was able to watch both of these matches and it was obvious that Wozniacki was playing at about 50% and tanked the second set in both occasions. I was also able to watch two of her three matches in the French Open and I can say she is a completely different player. Not only she plays without fear of her injury, but she is also in top shape. As for Pennetta, she had a pretty average clay court season. She won the title in Marbella but after that she had disappointing losses to Lucie Safarofa and Andrea Petkovic. She was very convincing against Polona Hercog in the third round, but the Slovenian was giving her way to many unforced errors. Something she won’t see from Caroline. The two have played only two times against each other and Wozniacki won both of those fairly easy. Both of these matches were played last year so they are relevant.

    Good luck.
    Both are winners.

We are getting into the second week of the French Open and by now I have a very good idea of the current form of each of the remaining players. I will start my picks with a match that is not going to be played until Tuesday. I think there is great value and must jump on it before the lines move.

Elena Dementieva over Nadia Petrova at 2.44 (Betfair, with 5% commission included) 1 unit
            Probability of winning: ~ 50%

I made good money taking Petrova as a dog against Rezai and Venus Williams, but the time has come to fade her. I was amazed to find out that the two have played each other fifteen times in the past with Dementieva winning eight of them. Of course, most of those are irrelevant because they were played more than five years ago. If we count the matches since 2007, then Dementiva leads the head-to-head by 4-1. So it is hard to convince me that Dementieva shouldn’t be favored here. I realize that her injury definitely affects the price, but that’s where the value is coming from. I watched her against Scheepers and the injury didn’t look too serious. She will have tomorrow to recover so I think she will be at least 90% ready for the match. Moreover, Dementieva is at the end of her career and having not won any Grand Slams, she will do everything possible to finally win one and now is probably the best opportunity.

            Onto my plays for tomorrow:

Daniela Hantuchova over Jelena Jankovic at 3.13 (Pinnacle) 1 unit
            Probability of winning: ~ 40%

There is no reason for Jankovic to be that big of a favorite given that she lost the two recent matches against Hantuchova. They played in the quarterfinal in Charleston and Daniela won in three sets. Most recently, they played in the Fed Cup where Jelena had the home crowd supporting her, but couldn’t even win a set. On the other hand, Hantuchova has been very impressive since she changed her coach and has had some good results. I was particularly surprised by her performance against Wickmayer in the previous round. She wasn’t making too many unforced errors and her first serve percentage was pretty high. Therefore, I think that if Daniela shows her best she will win this one.

Fernando Verdasco over Nicolas Almagro at 1.84 (Pinnacle) 1.25 units
            Probability of winning: ~ 66%

Verdasco was definitely among the top 3 players during the clay court season. He had an amazing month but the mistake he did was playing too many tournaments. Now he is paying the price and he looked a little injured in his previous match. I think the public might be overreacting to this little injury and the fatigue effect. Verdasco is an amazing athlete and I am sure he can play three five setters in a row without a drop in his level. Almagro didn’t have a good clay court season, but he is always a dangerous player on this surface. Note that he has lost the last nine sets against Verdasco, so I don’t see a reason why Verdasco shouldn’t win this match. If you want to be safe with his injury, place the bet in a bookmaker that voids bets in a case of a retirement regardless of the score (bet365).
            Good Luck.

We are already in the semifinals of the French Open and many of the matches (except Rafa Nadal over Melzer) seem unpredictable. At this stage, everyone is giving their best and forgets about fatigue and injuries. So any match with odds bigger than 2 has potential value. Here is my analysis on two of the games for tomorrow:

Elena Dementieva over Francesca Schiavone at 2.1 (Pinnacle) 1 unit
                      Probability of winning: ~ 50%

When the odds came out, Dementieva was being the favorite but there has been heavy betting on the Italian and now the Russian is the dog:

                      06/01 12:20 2.29 / 1.71
                      06/01 12:30 2.26 / 1.74
                      06/01 12:41 2.24 / 1.75
                      06/01 13:03 2.21 / 1.76
                      06/01 13:32 2.19 / 1.78
                      06/01 14:53 2.17 / 1.79
                      06/01 15:22 2.18 / 1.78
                      06/01 17:25 2.13 / 1.82
                      06/01 19:16 2.10 / 1.84
                      06/01 19:53 2.08 / 1.85
                      06/01 21:06 2.04 / 1.88
                      06/02 02:50 2.03 / 1.90
                      06/02 05:00 1.98 / 1.94
                      06/02 10:41 1.96 / 1.96
                      06/02 10:44 1.92 / 2.01
                      06/02 12:56 1.93 / 2.00
                      06/02 13:22 1.92 / 2.01
                      06/02 14:46 1.90 / 2.03
                      06/02 15:35 1.87 / 2.06
                      06/02 16:13 1.84 / 2.10
                      06/02 18:44 1.85 / 2.09

Schiavone is definitely playing some of her best tennis ever and she is capable of winning it all, but the problem is her lack of experience at the big stage. She has never played a semifinal in a Grand Slam event and nerves will play a big role in her game. I have seen matches of her where she has trouble putting a ball in the court. An example of such match is her last meeting with Pennetta. She had the extra pressure of playing her best friend and also she wanted to prove she is the best Italian. She didn’t handle it well and took a beating in a match that was expected to be very close. So I am not sure if she will handle the pressure tomorrow. On the other hand, Dementieva has not been very impressive in her first matches at the French, but she is a fighter and will give it all for sure. There is the question about her being injured and I think that’s the reason for the heavy betting on Schiavone. However, I am sure she will fight through the pain as this seems to be her last real chance of winning a slam. Many times she has been very impressive in the first rounds only to blow the semifinal or the final. Now, she sneaked through with ugly play and has the confidence to do it.

Tomas Berdych over Robin Soderling at 2.83 (Pinnacle) 1 unit
                      Probability of winning: 45%

Both of these guys are playing amazing tennis right now and it’s hard to convince me that the Swede should have that big of an edge. I think Soderling is overvalued here because of his win against Federer in the previous round and there is some overreaction to it. Berdych has been equally impressive and destroyed good players, such as Isner , Youzhny and Murray. He also has a win over Roger this season. But most importantly, he won the last meeting between the two. He did it in a very convincing way winning 6-2 6-2 in the semifinals in Miami. Some may say that Berdych is less experienced on the big stage, but that’s not the case. Indeed, he has never played a semifinal in a slam, but has won a Masters Series event. Something Soderling has never done. Anyway, I think this match is going to come to the big points and with the style they have some luck is going to be needed. But with such high odds on the Czech, this play definitely provides some value.

                      Good Luck.

                              Grass Court Tennis Plays

The French Open is over but luckily we don’t have to wait long for the next tennis matches. Tomorrow the grass court is starting with two tournaments – Gerry Webber in Germany and the AEGON Championship in England. Here are my first plays:

Karol Beck over Rajeev Ram at 2.22 (Betfair, with 5% commission included)
                              Probability of winning: ~ 50%

I just don’t see a reason why Rajeev Ram should be the favorite here. He just got hot for one week last year to win the title in Newport (grass court tournament) but other than that he is just an average player that has no place in the top 100. He is on a four match losing streak, and not long ago he had a six match losing streak. On the other hand, Karol Beck is on a five match losing streak but before that he did extremely well on the challenger tour winning two out of three tournaments and making it to the final of the third. He did pretty well at Wimbledon last year beating Feliciano Lopez in the first round and losing to Almagro in the second round in five sets. So he is also capable of winning on grass and taking him as a dog here has value.

Vicktor Troicki over Guillermo Garcia Lopez at 1.73 (Pinnacle) 2 units
                              Probability of winning: ~ 66%

Those should be the odds if the match was going to be played on clay, but on grass courts the Serbian has a big advantage. He has a bigger serve and his flat groundstrokes do more damage. Troicki made it to the third round of Wimbledon last year so he has shown he can play on this surface. Being a Spaniard, you would expect Guillermo Garcia Lopez to be very weak on grass, but he actually had a very good grass court season last year. He made it to the third round in Queens and then played a semifinal at Eastbourne. However, he didn’t beat any top players so I consider his accomplishment a product of luck rather than amazing skill and there is good value coming out of this. The two have played twice against each other with Troicki coming on top both of the times, so he will have a small mental edge.

Somdev Devvarman over Mardy Fish at 5.52 (Pinnacle) .5 units
                              Probability of winning: ~ 25%

Somdev has no much experience playing on grass since he is a newcomer to the tour. He played college tennis for UVA before turning pro two years ago. He only has three matches from last year and he lost all of them. But he has amazing returns and I am sure he will be able to break Fish’s serve couple of times. His serve is nothing special but if he gets up early in the macth I can see him pulling the upset. He has already defeated big servers on fast surfaces (Isner, Malisse), so he will have the confidence to do it. Mardy Fish, on the other hand, is a solid player on fast surfaces and if he shows his best tomorrow he will win. But I have seen him lose to mediocre players so a small play on the Indian is the way to go.

                              Good Luck.

i love troicki here, think that beck has the value but i'm not really sure where you see fish as a bad favorite here. the guy seemed like he was on a mission at the french, having a great year, needs to defend quarterfinal points here, has a really good serve. i just dont think devvarman is worth the play and is definitely not 25% here. the guy can definitely hold his own on the ground so gl though

Devvarman owns Isner on hard courts so he definitely has chance vs. Fish. Maybe 20% but I am still putting .5 units.

                                                Good Luck.
                                                Troicki wins 6-1 7-6
                                                Beck loses 6-1 3-6 6-4
Devvarman's match posponed for tomorrow but most likely a loss.

                                                  Grass Court Tennis Plays

It was good to see some grass court tennis after the long clay season. I was able to identify some value plays from across the three tournaments and here they are:

Grigor Dimitrov over Alex Bogdanovic at 2.54 (Betfair, with 5% commission included) 1 unit
                                                  Probability of winning: ~ 45%

It is important to note that this match has already started but will be finished tomorrow because rain interrupted it. In a way, it is a live bet but some bookmakers are offering it normally. The current score is 6 – 4, 3 – 6, 2 – 1 Bogdanovic and Grigor is about to serve. The game looked very even and there is no reason why Bogdanovic should be the favorite here. He is ranked much higher than the Bulgarian, but supposedly Dimitrov is a top 20 talent (highly doubt he will meet the expectations) and should be able to pull it through. He won Wimbledon in the juniors two years ago, so obviously he is a good grass court player. The two have met before once and Dimitrov won a tough three setter so he will have the mental edge if it comes down to the wire. The way I see it, most likely there won’t be any breaks and a tiebreak will decide the match. Dimitrov should have a slight edge there so getting such a high price on him has great value. The reason I gave him approximately 45% chance of winning is that he is one hold of serve behind.

Vania King over Kirsten Flipkens at 2.62 (Bet365) 1 unit
                                                  Probability of winning: ~45%

It is very rare to see the best price at juicy book like Bet365 so this is a very rare occasion. The specific thing about this bookmaker is that if a player retires all bets are void regardless of the score, which is a good thing in my opinion. As for the match, I don’t really see a reason why Flipkens should be such a big favorite here. Both of them are ranked around the 70s and both have won some big matches, but in general they rarely make it to the later rounds of the tournaments. I think the reason Flipkens is the favorite here is her better record on grass courts, but when you examine it closely it is not that much better. Last season King lost three of the four grass court matches, but played some good players. Flipkens got to the third round of Wimbledon beating Szavay and Baltacha but both were struggling at that time. King and Flipkens have played once against each other in a 2007 Fed Cup match. The American won a tough three setter, so that’s another reason why I like her for tomorrow. She is also a very good doubles player and is currently ranked 24 in the world, which is quite an accomplishment. Given her small size, her serve is not a big weapon but her returns are very good and she is one of the few girls on tour that can actually volley well.

                                                  Good Luck.

                                                        Good Luck.

The match was played on fast indoor courts in France so Julien has shown that he can handle Anderson’s serve. Last week, Anderson played a challenger event on grass courts but lost in the second round to a player ranked 150 in the world. On the other hand, Benneteau’s easy win over a tough player like Clement in the fisrt round showed that he is currently in top shape.
