Play #229: [Spain La Liga] Villarreal +1/+1.5 (-105)
It's a tough road trip to Barcelona, but Villarreal is equipped to keep this contest close. Barca will be without Messi, but they are deep enough for that to not be a major factor. Villarreal has not been coming away with wins on the road, just 1-5-1 in La Liga, but they have kept all their matches close. Their last roadie was a win at Atletico Madrid 2-1, with the six road matches prior to that resulting in 5 losses by one goal and a 1-1 draw. Villarreal has also come away with strong performances at Camp Nou with last season's meetings resulting in a 3-3 draw and a 2-1 Villarreal win. 3 of Barca's last 5 at home have ended 1-0 in favor of the home side and Villarreal has gone 11 straight matches in the league without losing by more than one goal. Villarreal may not have the juice to steal the full three points here, but if Barca shows up with anything less than their best, Villarreal has what it takes to keep this within a goal or perhaps get a point with a draw.

Play #231: [Spain La Liga] Getafe vs. Real Valladolid OVER 2.5 (-117)
Getafe has been on a solid goal scoring run with multiple goals in each of their last 5 matches. At home, they've scored multiple goals in 5 of 7 and conceded a goal in 6 of 7. Valladolid has been a goal magnet lately with at least one goal scored and conceded in 5 straight in La Liga. On the road, Valladolid has given up at least one goal in 6 of 7 and yielded multiple goals in 3 of the last 5. They have only failed to score twice in 7 matches on the road. If Getafe continues their recent form, it seems possible that they can once again net multiple goals against this Valladolid side. If Valladolid gets on the scoresheet, the over seems probable.

Play #232: [Spain La Liga] Villarreal ML (-220)
Villarreal has a solid record of 5 wins, 1 loss and 2 draws on their home pitch in La Liga this season. Their opponents this weekend, Almeria, have struggled for anything on the road. Almeria has 1 win, 6 losses and 1 draw away from home. Almeria has lost 5 of 6 on the road in league play with their lone win coming against Malaga who currently ranks 18th in the table. Villarreal is 7-2-1 at home in their last 10 overall with wins in five straight in La Liga. Villarreal should field a starting eleven similar to the one that was able to draw on the road with Barcelona, 1-1 one week ago. At home, Villarreal has tallied multiple goals in five straight matches with 15 goals in that span. They have conceded just four goals in their last five at home. Almeria hasn't had issues getting on the scoresheet away from home with at least one goal in five of eight matches. The big problem has been the defense that has given up at least one goal in all eight road matches with 12 goals allowed in the last five. Villarreal currently sits 9th in the table in La Liga, but possesses the talent to make a push toward the upper tier. There is no better place to begin that then with gaining the full three points with a win at home over floundering Almeria. The team has stressed the importance of this stretch against Almeria and then Valencia next week, knowing two positive results could help catapult them toward the top of the table. Meanwhile, Almeria has to be concerned with their proximity to the relegation zone in the standings, just three points ahead of the drop spots. They'll have a tough go in this one with top scorer Kalu Uche away on international duty. With Villarreal's current strong run at home and Almeria's struggle to stop the opposition on the road, expecting the "Yellow Submarine" to push to a strong win at home at El Madrigal. The asian handicap at -1 (-125ish) is also a strong play, but if Almeria continues their scoring ways on the road, a 2-1 Villarreal scoreline is quite possible and that would gain just a push. Don't usually like the big chalk, but this one looks very solid to me despite the risk.

Stadio San Paolo is home to this clash in Naples between the 5th place team in Serie A in Napoli and the 9th place squad in Sampdoria. Napoli will be hoping to keep pace with both Roma and Juventus on the table as both squads won on Saturday to settle into 4th and 3rd places respectively ahead of Napoli. If the Naples side can gain all three points on Sunday, they can push past both and settle into 3rd place just one point behind A.C. Milan in second. In 8 home matches this season, Napoli is averaging 1.75 goals per contest while allowing just under one goal. Napoli has tallied at least two goals in 6 of 8 at home this season and have scored at least two goals in four of their last five in league play. Napoli has kept three clean sheets at home this season and come in with successive shutouts of Chievo and Atalanta. Sampdoria heads into this match with multiple goals yielded in three of their last five in Serie A. On the road, they have had all sorts of issues with allowing goals. They have allowed three goals or more in four of their last five league matches with the totals going over 2.5 in four of the last five on the road. Napoli's current form at home indicates that they should have success against a club in Sampdoria that has struggled to keep its opponents in-check on the road this season. Sampdoria has scored in five of nine road matches, but has been held scoreless in three out of its last four matches on the road. If they score in this match, I think this one will find a total over three rather easily. Even if Sampdoria is held scoreless, it appears their defense is leaky enough to allow a potent home side in Napoli to potentially score three goals and cover this one all by themselves. Taking the conservative 2/2.5 approach over the straight 2.5 in case of a two goal finish.

Not going to go too in depth here, just a feeling that this one is tailor made for goals. Can't see how either team will be held off the scoresheet today. Juventus has scored and conceded in four straight Serie A matches. At home, only two of nine matches have gone lower than two goals for the total. Juventus has scored and conceded in 6 of their last 7 at home. Milan meanwhile may be about to rev it up a gear with Beckham in the fold. The pace of their attack against Parma was delicious and it resulted in tons of pressure with five goals in all. Milan has been steady on the road all season scoring-wise with two goals in each of their last in league play. They have scored and conceded in 4 of their last 5 on the road. With both battling for 2nd place, some will tell you this has the makings of a draw, but I think with the pressure on Juventus' manager to produce results and the addition of Beckham to the offense for Milan that we will see one of these teams net multiple goals today. That or my slide continues.

It's the first English Premier League clash for both Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers to start off 2010. City ended 2009 with two successive league wins after sacking manager Mark Hughes. New boss, Roberto Mancini, has led City to a 2-0 win over Stoke City at home and a 3-0 road thumping over Wolverhampton. Carlos Tevez has flexed his scoring boot with three goals in those two matches. This match looms especially large for Manchester City as gaining the full three points on their home pitch at City of Manchester Stadium would see them vault past Tottenham into fourth place. The team may get the opportunity though to debut new signee Patrick Vieira. Vieira was acquired from Inter Milan and returns to the English Premier League where the midfielder played with Arsenal from 1996-2005. He does half a calf problem according to some information that has been going around, so it's still somewhat iffy if he gets on the pitch today. On the other side for Blackburn, the Rovers will be seeking their first win in league play since November. Blackburn has not had a good season on the road, winning just once, losing 7 times and drawing in two matches. Blackburn is giving up over two goals per road match in league play this season. They have given up multiple goals in 7 of 10 away from home. Offensively, they have staggered to score goals on the road with scores in just half of their ten matches. Despite that, 6 of 10 have still hit for at least three goals due mainly to their leaky play on defense. In all competitions, Blackburn has given up 10 goals in their last five matches. The two squads met at Blackburn early in the season in August with Man City ripping off a 2-0 win. In looking at City's home matches, 6 of 9 have hit for at least three goals. Two of the three that failed to get to three goals did so because of City clean sheets against their opponents. With all that being said, the total for this one is set reasonably at 2.5 (-118) at BetPhoenix, but seeing as Mancini seems to have shorn up the defensive woes of City (three shutouts, two in EPL & one in Carling Cup) there is a possibility that this might hit for two goals. Therefore, with Blackburn's woes on the road, I think it's wise to take the more likely outcome of Manchester City snagging another win for their new boss at home with pretty juicy odds of just -107 for the asian handicap of -1. Half of City's six wins at home have come by two goals or better and Mancini has guided them to two EPL wins by two goals or more, so it seems a good shot that he could go three for three or at worst, you get the push if City wins by one goal only.
