One of the craziest stories in recent college football history has come to an end with Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby opting to withdraw his court filing that granted him an injunction against the NCAA to make him eligible for the 2026-27 college football season.

Instead, Sorsby, who was ruled ineligible by the NCAA due to a gambling scandal, is entering the NFL supplemental draft, which is expected to take place sometime in July. Sorsby has a Pro Day slated for July 10.

Viewed as a potential starting QB in the pros, the New York Jets lead the Brendan Sorsby next team odds as the favorites at our prediction market apps to select him in the supplemental draft.

🎟️ Who will take Sorsby in the NFL supplemental draft?

The favorites: New York Jets (27%), Arizona Cardinals (15%)

The two teams with the biggest long-term holes at QB are the obvious choices to forfeit a 2027 NFL Draft pick and select Sorsby in the supplemental draft, right? I have my doubts.

Aaron Glenn needs to show some improvements, so the New York Jets brought in Geno Smith to steady the ship, but he's turning 36 years old and coming off a season in which he led the league in interceptions. New York's other QBs are last year's undrafted rookie Brady Cook, Western Kentucky legend Bailey Zappe, and fourth-round rookie Cade Klubnik, who's a career backup at best.

As for the Arizona Cardinals, it's even less inspiring. Jacoby Brissett is the starter after a failed holdout, and he's backed up by a man better known for his mustache and jean shorts than his quarterbacking, Gardner Minshew.

Mike LaFleur's only other options are third-round rookie Carson Beck, who went about 30 picks earlier than anyone expected, and Kedon Slovis, who has only two more career pass attempts than you and me.

The Jets could potentially select Sorsby if GM Darren Mougey is bullish on him, but New York has three first-round picks in the 2027 NFL Draft and could potentially be in a position to select a top QB prospect. Meanwhile, the Cardinals look like they could be in full tank mode for Arch Manning, so I don't expect them to burn a 2027 pick on Sorsby.

Teams with QB questions

  • Pittsburgh Steelers (12%): Aaron Rodgers is heading into his last season, and Mike McCarthy's only other options are bleak, but Pittsburgh just used a third-round pick on Drew Allar
  • Minnesota Vikings (11%): JJ McCarthy is already being labeled a bust, and Kyler Murray's in town, which means Murray will either be the answer, or Minnesota will be picking early enough in 2027 for new GM Nolan Teasley to draft a QB he believes in
  • Miami Dolphins (9%): Though Malik Willis is being set up to fail after signing a 3-year, $67.5 million contract, that might be the plan for a Dolphins team that will probably be in contention to draft Manning, so there's no reason to take Sorsby
  • Cleveland Browns (7%): It's already been reported that the Browns are "unlikely" to bid on Sorsby, which makes sense given how much they already have going on in their headache-inducing QB room
  • Indianapolis Colts (2%): The Colts would be a good spot for Sorsby to sit and learn, and it would make sense for Indianapolis to be interested with Daniel Jones coming off a torn Achilles

The wildcards: The entire NFC South

The supplemental draft isn't expected until July, and due to Sorsby's NCAA infractions, an NFL suspension could be on the horizon, so I wouldn't expect Sorsby to play all that much as a rookie. That would be the ideal outcome for a player dealing with a gambling scandal and in need of stability.

And getting a high-upside QB at a discount could be enticing for several teams that currently have iffy answers under center and could be looking for another option in the near future.

For the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9%), Baker Mayfield needs a new contract, and it doesn't look like it's getting done anytime soon. Could Jason Licht look to add Sorsby, who has been compared to Mayfield, as a potential answer if a contract extension doesn't get done?

The Carolina Panthers (8%) are in a somewhat similar boat with Bryce Young. Without many options, the team exercised the former No. 1 pick's fifth-year option. Adding a talent like Sorsby to push Young would be a smart play, especially if it only costs a Day 3 pick.

The New Orleans Saints (1%) look like the least likely NFC South team to be in on Sorsby. Still, they're banking a lot on the idea that last year's second-round pick, Tyler Shough, will take a big leap in his second season under Kellen Moore.

Now, to my favorite landing spot for Sorsby, the Atlanta Falcons (1%). While Atlanta hasn't been linked to him much, Sorsby's athleticism and arm should have both GM Ian Cunningham and head coach Kevin Stefanski intrigued. With Tua Tagovailoa being a stop-gap option at this point, and Michael Penix Jr.'s injury issues, Sorsby in A-Town makes too much sense.

🔬 Scouting the tape: Brendan Sorsby as an NFL prospect

Brendan Sorsby | QB | Texas Tech/Cincinnati Biggest pros Biggest cons
6'3" | 235 pounds | 22 years old Arm talent is special and pops off the tape with ability to push ball outside the numbers and rip tight window throws Ball placement can be inconsistent, with accuracy issues plaguing him at times on all three levels (lack of touch leads to sprays)
2025 stats (Cincinnati): 2,800 passing yards, 580 rushing yards, 36 total TDs, 5 INTs Can make throws off-platform and out of structure with varying arm angles that allow him to thrive when the play breaks down and he escapes the pocket Footwork and lower body mechanics are inconsistent and lazy (contributes to accuracy issues, too) - arm talent allows him to get away with this at college level
2025 advanced stats: 6.4% big-time throw rate, 71% adjusted completion rate, 1.8% turnover-worthy play rate, 6.1% pressure-to-sack rate Rarely puts the ball in conflict (even when he misses, it's usually out of play for defenders) and surprisingly doesn't force much, despite his arm talent Can be skittish when the pocket gets muddy and leads to him speeding up his process and checking down early
NFL comparison: Jay Cutler Combo of size and mobility is impressive and makes Sorsby a threat as a runner (also has a knack for avoiding sacks) Doesn't throw with consistent anticipation ... more of a wait and see thrower

It's not hard to see the NFL talent that Sorsby possesses. He has a flashy arm that jumps off the tape when pushing the ball downfield, layering it over linebackers down the seam, or ripping it into tight windows over the middle. And his physical tools go beyond just his arm; he's capable of extending plays and making eye-popping throws off-platform while offering the athleticism to move the chains with his legs.

The physical tools are clearly there, and we know NFL teams love to buy in on traits. With that said, it's clear why Sorsby opted to return for his senior season rather than declare for the 2026 NFL Draft.

Sorsby's ball placement can be sporadic, especially when the pass rush speeds him up, and he can't escape the pocket and lean on his movement skills. This is when you'll see him force the ball into conflict or spray it and miss an open target.

His skittishness in the pocket can lead to inaccurate throws outside the numbers, his eyes peeking at the pass rush and missing open receivers, and trouble keeping plays on time.

Still, purely as a football player, he would have been my QB3 in the 2026 NFL Draft, behind just Fernando Mendoza and Ty Simpson, both of whom went top 15.

How will Sorsby's gambling scandal impact his supplemental draft stock?

While Sorsby's tape can be intoxicating with his pure physical skills, the biggest question with him as an NFL prospect that will dictate where he goes in the supplemental draft is his gambling addiction.

The NCAA ruled him ineligible for placing more than 10,000 bets totalling at least $90,000 over the past four years. That includes at least 40 bets on Indiana football while a member of the team. And even after his injunction was granted, he was set to serve a two-game suspension at Texas Tech.

When the NCAA suspended Terrelle Pryor for the first five games of 2011 at Ohio State due to "Tattoogate," he opted to enter the supplemental draft. But the NFL did honor the NCAA's suspension, and Pryor served an NFL-mandated five-game suspension for the scandal at Ohio State.

So not only do NFL teams have to consider Sorsby's gambling scandal, but they'll also likely have to be prepared for him to serve a suspension once in the pros.

Since 2023, the NFL has suspended nine players for betting on sports. The three players who bet on non-NFL sporting events from team-owned facilities served six-game suspensions. The six players who bet on NFL games were suspended indefinitely and reinstated after one year.

Which round will Sorsby be selected in the supplemental draft?

With the physical tools that tend to land QBs in Round 1 but tape that says he's closer to a Day 3 pick, Sorsby likely would have landed somewhere early on Day 2 of the 2026 NFL Draft had he declared (and not been caught up in a gambling scandal).

He's a better prospect than both Beck and Allar, both of whom were taken in the third round. With that said, Sorsby could be suspended by the NFL, is dealing with a serious addiction and scandal, and teams will be hesitant to burn a quality pick on him with how strong the 2027 NFL Draft is expected to be, especially at QB.

A QB-needy team forfeiting a Day 3 pick for Sorsby seems like the likely outcome. He has the talent to be a developmental starter, but the baggage will push him down the board. I wouldn't expect him to go earlier than the fourth round, nor later than the sixth.

Prediction: Brendan Sorsby is selected in the fourth round of the NFL supplemental draft by the Atlanta Falcons

🚨 What is NFL supplemental draft?

The NFL supplemental draft is a draft the league holds for players who have had their college eligibility impacted, but did not enter the NFL draft in the spring. Unlike the NFL draft, the supplemental draft doesn't take place every year, and it uses a bidding system for eligible players.

It began in 1977 as an alternate draft for players who didn't declare for the regular NFL draft by the deadline and are now unable to participate in the college football season due to eligibility issues.

Over the last 20 years, 12 players have been selected in the NFL supplemental draft; however, it has not taken place since 2023, with no selections since 2019.

Since its inception in 1977, 46 players have been selected in the NFL supplemental draft, including eight players taken in the first round. In total, the NFL supplemental draft has produced eight players who have earned at least one Pro Bowl and one Pro Football Hall of Famer (Cris Carter).

How the NFL supplemental draft works

  • The blind bidding system: NFL franchises submit a blind, electronic bid stating the specific round they are willing to give up for a player
  • The draft order tiers: The bidding order is broken into three distinct lottery tiers based on the previous season: teams with six or fewer wins, non-playoff teams with more than six wins, and the 14 postseason teams - the order within each group is randomly selected
  • Forfeiting the future pick: If a team wins the bidding war - for example, the Buccaneers winning Sorsby with a fifth-round bid - they receive the player immediately, but must forfeit their corresponding fifth-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft
