The No. 7 seed Marquette Golden Eagles (23-10) meet the No. 10 seed New Mexico Lobos (26-7) tonight in a South Region NCAA Tournament first-round matchup. Tipoff from Rocket Arena in Cleveland is at 7:25 p.m. ET (TBS), and we offer our Marquette vs. New Mexico prediction, odds, and preview.

The Golden Eagles are 4-point betting favorites to advance in the South Region of the March Madness bracket. Still, all signs point to this being a one-score game as part of our March Madness predictions.

✅ New Mexico to cover the spread: +4.5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Lobos are just 4-3 in their last seven games, but they have wins over the UCLA Bruins, San Diego State Aztecs, and Boise State Broncos on their resume. More importantly, they have Donovan Dent, the nation’s eighth-leading scorer. He’s scored at least 20 in six consecutive games entering this tournament, and even though the Golden Eagles are allowing just 68.5 points per game, they’ve allowed 84.0 per game in their last three.

Golden Eagles leading scorer Kam Jones is also red-hot entering the tournament. He has scored at least 21 in four consecutive games, and he dropped 32 against the St. John’s Red Storm on March 8. However, the Golden Eagles enter this game losers of three of their last four, though two of those losses were to St. John’s.

Both teams average at least 76.9 points per game, so I expect this to be a high-scoring back-and-forth affair. While the Golden Eagles ultimately escape with the win, Dent and the Lobos will keep this within one possession.

🔥 Donovan Dent Over 20.5 points ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Three of our best sports betting apps have this prop available, and two of them have Dent’s total set at 22.5. It’s just a matter of time before FanDuel’s total rises, so get in as soon as possible.

Dent is averaging 20.6 points per game this season, and while it’s been a while since he’s faced a team as good as Marquette, fading the best scorer on a team that averages 80 points per game is not smart. Dent has scored at least 23 points in five of his last six games. While he failed to score 20 against either St. John’s or UCLA, those games were early in the season, and he has scored fewer than 20 points in just one of his last 10 games.

The Golden Eagles’ have not finished the season strong defensively. They’ve given up at least 79 points in three consecutive games and allowed the Xavier Musketeers to put up 87 on them. They may hold the Lobos below their season average of 80, but Dent will top his average in a high-scoring game.

🎯 Score prediction: Marquette 83, New Mexico 81

These are two high-powered offenses, and the defenses will struggle to slow down excellent scorers. The Lobos allowed more than 70 points per game this season, despite playing against weak competition in the majority of their conference games. The Golden Eagles will easily take advantage of that weakness.

But the Lobos like to play fast, and they are the type of Mid-Major that can cause headaches for any top-tier conference. Dent will show the nation why he’s one of the best scorers in the country, but he won’t be able to do enough to secure the Lobos’ victory.
