Last year’s NL Cy Young Award winner Paul Skenes has had his fair share of troubles in the first inning this year, but a matchup with him opposed by Spencer Arrighetti was one of the most appealing additions to my best NRFI bets today.

While I add two more NRFI plays that might seem straightforward, perhaps my most unconventional MLB wager is my only YRFI (Yes Run First Inning, meaning at least one of the two teams will score before the second inning begins), which opposed Philadelphia Phillies ace Cristopher Sanchez amid a historic scoreless innings streak.

Padres vs. Phillies YRFI (+105 via bet365) 1u → 1.05u A rematch of this same starting pitching matchup from a week ago should tilt the advantage to the batters

💰 Best NRFI bet today

Tigers vs. Rays (1:10 p.m. ET)

  • Troy Melton (1.42 ERA) vs. Nick Martinez (1.62 ERA)
  • NRFI records: Tigers (34-28) vs. Rays (28-30)

This Tigers-Rays matchup features two opposing starting pitchers with sub-1.65 ERAs, though Nick Martinez’s 1.62 ERA (third-lowest among qualified pitchers) is more impressive since it came over a 66 2/3 innings span.

Detroit exploded for 10 runs in Monday’s series-opening win, but had only scored six runs over a four-game losing streak coming in. And while Troy Melton owns a low career 17.4% strikeout rate, that doesn’t matter as much against a Rays offense that is in the bottom half of the league in BABIP over the last two weeks (but ranks fourth in that metric overall).

📡 SBR Edge: Detroit's history of the wrong kind

Prior to Monday's win over Tampa Bay, the Tigers had lost 21 of their previous 25 games, which was their worst 25-game stretch since 2019.

🔥 More NRFI picks today

Padres vs. Phillies (6:40 p.m. ET)

  • Walker Buehler (4.88 ERA) vs. Cristopher Sanchez (1.47)
  • YRFI records: Padres (21-38) vs. Phillies (31-29)

Cristopher Sanchez enters this start amid a 44 2/3 scoreless innings streak. That is the third-longest by a left-handed pitcher in a single season since 1900, and the longest by a Phillies pitcher since 1893.

This starting pitching matchup between Sanchez and Walker Buehler is the same one from last Wednesday when Philadelphia won a 3-0 pitcher’s duel. But I am taking a flier on a YRFI because the advantage should now switch to each lineup with there being just a week in between seeing each pitcher last.

In addition, Sanchez didn’t have the best numbers against current Padres hitters prior to the last start, as he allowed a .333/.356/.477 slash line in 84 combined at-bats.

Blue Jays vs. Braves (7:15 p.m. ET)

  • Patrick Corbin (3.65 ERA) vs. Grant Holmes (3.95 ERA)
  • NRFI records: Blue Jays (30-31) vs. Braves (27-34)

On the surface, this looks like another opportunity to get value from a YRFI perspective, as Patrick Corbin has allowed a .354./.408/.634 slash line in 158 combined at-bats to current Braves hitters. And while a lot of that damage came from Matt Olson and Ozzie Albies, who each own OPS’s of 1.101 or higher in their head-to-head matchups, they were slugging just .377 and .365 over the last 15 days entering this series.

Corbin’s 1.1 WAR is a welcomed sight after he finished four of the previous five seasons with a negative WAR. And I expect Grant Holmes to match zeroes early considering his NRFI record is 9-2 while cashing it in four straight starts.

Pirates vs. Astros (8:10 p.m. ET)

  • Paul Skenes (2.89 ERA) vs. Spencer Arrighetti (1.34 ERA)
  • NRFI records: Pirates (29-32) vs. Astros (24-38)

This may not be as chalky a pick as one would think, considering Paul Skenes’ 6.94 first-inning ERA is by far his worst of any of the first five innings. In addition, Skenes’ road ERA is more than a full run higher than his ERA at PNC Park this season.

However, five of Skenes’ nine earned runs allowed in the first inning this season came in a disastrous Opening Day start.

Meanwhile, Spencer Arrighetti has been an absolute stud for an injury-ravaged Astros pitching staff. He pitched to a 0.93 ERA in May, and only one opponent has scored more than three runs in any of his eight starts (the team is 7-1 in that span).

🚀 Best NRFI parlay today

With a full 15-game slate of data to scour, it was easier to build a NRFI/YRFI parlay around advantageous matchups. The four legs of this parlay offer a great balance between games with ace level pitchers (Skenes, Arrighetti, Martinez) and those between unfamiliar opponents, as two of these wagers are from interleague games.

💵 Best NRFI parlay today

  • Padres-Phillies YRFI (+100)
  • Blue Jays-Braves NRFI (+100)
  • Pirates-Astros NRFI (-130)

Best odds: +1251 via DraftKings (0.1u -> 1.25u)

💡 How I'm betting NRFI picks today (June 3)

Follow all of our MLB analysis and expert predictions for baseball season.

With my four MLB NRFI/YRFI plays, I am striking a balance between positive trends like the breakout seasons for Patrick Corbin and Nick Martinez, while expecting continued success from other starting pitchers who have shown consistency over several seasons, like Skenes and Arrighetti. Backing a YRFI play in the Padres-Phillies game bucks the trend that the NRFI has cashed in five straight Sanchez starts.

❓ NRFI betting FAQ

What does NRFI mean in baseball betting?

NRFI stands for "No Run First Inning." It's a popular MLB bet that neither team will score in the first inning of a game, and the bet settles after just six outs (three per half-inning).

What does YRFI mean?

YRFI stands for "Yes Run First Inning" - the opposite of an NRFI. This MLB prop bet cashes if there's at least one run by either team in the first inning.

What should I look for when betting NRFIs?

Each team's starting pitcher is the biggest factor in cashing a NRFI bet, but you should also focus on each team's NRFI records (home vs. away) and each lineup's first-inning tendencies. Recent form can also play a bigger role than full-season numbers.
