Mexico to win Group A (-115)

Look, I get it, this isn't the sexy pick to lead out with. But it's the one I'm most confident with. Right out of the gate, before we look at the games, just let it sink in that teams native to high altitudes have been found to have upwards of a 30% greater probability of winning against teams that play most of their games closer to sea level. Studies have found that each 1,000-meter increase in altitude increases the home team's goal difference by about 0.5 goals.  

The opener against South Africa should be a moderately well-managed game. While there is some risk that South Africa will be able to take advantage of a roaming fullback at some point, Mexico possesses enough attacking prowess to pull off the victory. Mexico's second game against South Korea might be the group-defining game, and beating a 3-4-2-1 South Korea press will be key to the victory. Looking at Mexico's roster, I have full faith that Julian Quinones' pace can help unlock that. 

Group play will wrap up with Czechia. That game could theoretically be a dead rubber, or it could be vitally important to shore up the group. Either way, Mexico will need to use its dominant 4-3-3 shape to handle the bulk of possession and prevent Czechia from getting crucial set pieces. If it can do that successfully, it will come out on top. 

Dual forecast: Mexico 1st / South Korea 2nd (+350)

I've already broken down why Mexico will finish first, so let's have a quick dive into why South Korea should steal the second spot. 

Honestly, it might come down to the second game of the whole tournament, when South Korea and Czechia tango. While Czechia could cause trouble here with set pieces (as above with Mexico), South Korea should be able to win the early tempo battle, and it's 3-4-2-1 should be able to bypass Czechia's low-block setup. Son Heung-Min and Lee Kang-in working together with quick, vertical passing should be all it takes the come away with the points here.
