Scottish Open Picks, Odds & Favorites 2023: Renaissance Club Hosts Final Major Tune-Up

The Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland once again hosts the final British Open tune-up event for many of the world's best golfers as the PGA Tour and DP World Tour merge. Below, we look at our best Scottish Open picks based on the odds from our best sports betting apps.

Xander Schauffele is back to try to defend his 2022 Scottish Open title but faces one of the strongest international fields in non-major golf. Scottie Scheffler, who remains No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), is the consensus betting favorite. He's closely followed by Rory McIlroy on the oddsboard, as the Northern Irishman is the early favorite by the British Open odds.

This is the second year that the Scottish Open is co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour and DP World Tour. Jon Rahm is one of the few notable absences from the field as he elects to do his British Open prep elsewhere this week. There's a $9 million purse up for grabs, along with 500 FedEx Cup points.

Scottish Open picks and predictions 2023

Justin Rose to win the Scottish Open (+4500)

Rose's odds dropped across the market over the course of Wednesday with his best price now the lingering +4500 via PointsBet and BetMGM. FanDuel is still offering the market-low odds of +3400 to highlight the value in this price point.

Rose made his debut at The Renaissance Club with a lackluster T-69 finish in 2022. However, he has been playing much better golf all through 2023, with a win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am early this year and has regained his form with three top-10 finishes in his last five events, including the Betfred British Masters just two weeks ago to climb back to No. 29 in the OWGR.

The 42-year-old ranks third in this field in strokes gained: approach across everyone's last 20 measured rounds. I expect Rose and the rest of the middle tiers of contenders to be more focused on winning this week while the top-end favorites have their sights set on winning 2023's final major.

Brian Harman to finish top 5 (+2000)

I'm intrigued by the +12500 odds available (via Caesars and PointsBet) for Harman to win this tournament but with his last solo victory (on any tour) coming in 2017, I'm going to play it safe with a top-5 bet on the 28th-ranked golfer in the OWGR. Further reason to play it conservatively with Harman is his missed cut in his debut in this event last year.

However, there are few, if any, weaknesses in Harman's game over his last 24 measured rounds. His strengths have been his irons, but he's also riding a hot putter that earned him recent finishes of T-2 and T-9 in the Travelers Championship and Rocket Mortgage Classic, respectively. The former was against an elevated PGA Tour field stronger than this.

Schauffele won this event by one stroke at minus-7 last summer and Aaron Rai won the DP World Tour event at minus-11 in 2021. This isn't typically a scoring fest, and that'll play to Harman's favor as he ranks third on the PGA Tour in bogey avoidance this season. He's also had recent success with links golf, tying for sixth in last year's Open Championship at St Andrews.

The weather is expected to worsen through the week in North Berwick, Scotland with light rain and gusty winds Saturday and Sunday. That'll suit Harman just fine as a consistent ball-striker.

Rasmus Hojgaard to finish top 20 (+360)

We're getting excellent value on the outright winner of last week's Made in Himmerland DP World Tour event. That was Hojgaard's fifth career victory (all on the DP World Tour), and he tied for 10th in this event last year. The +360 odds for a modest top-20 finish are too good to pass up.

Hojgaard moved back to 85th in the OWGR with that victory. While the win followed a withdrawal from the BMW International Open just two weeks before, the Danish golfer had a recent T-3 result in the KLM Open to go with a T-6 earlier this calendar year.

Hojgaard in an excellent putter who has plenty of distance for the 7,200-yard Renaissance Club. His faulty accuracy off the tee won't be as punished at this venue as it is at others.

Because of Hojgaard regularly playing in Europe, we're not seeing the same recency bias priced into the odds as we would for someone from the PGA Tour. Take advantage of a golfer in peak form as he looks to maintain that for two more weeks into the final major of 2023. DraftKings and Caesars share the +360 odds with FanDuel offering much lower odds of +250.
