Under the bill, The Wabanaki Nations, consisting of the Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, Micmac, and Houlton Band of Maliseet, will control the mobile sports betting market. In-person betting will be allowed at Maine’s two casinos in Oxford and Bangor.

Additionally, the bill will allow horse racing tracks at the Bangor Hollywood Casino Hotel & Raceway and Scarborough’s Scarborough Downs to operate retail sportsbooks.

It’s expected that mobile sports betting will comprise 85 percent of the market, and Senator Joseph Baldacci has estimated between $2 and $3 million would be generated through taxed sports betting revenue from the various mobile and in-person sportsbooks.

Maine’s 2022 State Legislature concludes Wednesday, so passing bill LD 585 through Tuesday evening has to have prospective sports bettors in The Pine Tree State happy and maybe even a little surprised.
