Global gambling group Entain has announced that two of its online casino and sports betting brands, Sports Interaction and PartyCasino, have transitioned to Alberta’s regulated market, following licensing approval from the province’s gaming regulator, the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC), on July 23.

Sports Interaction, which offers both sports betting and online casino gaming, has been a staple of sports betting sites in Canada since 1997. Entain describes the brand as “deeply embedded” in Alberta’s sports culture. Its operational teams are located in Calgary, and it offers Canadian-based support for players. Alberta sports betting users can also expect competitive odds, broad market coverage, and quick payouts.

On the other hand, PartyCasino enters the regulated Alberta online casino market with a vast gaming portfolio that consists of more than 3,000 titles, including slots and live-dealer games. The platform provides 24/7 player support and employs industry-standard protections to ensure responsible play.

"Alberta represents an exciting next step for regulated online gaming in Canada. What sets Entain apart is our deep commitment and roots in Canada," said Shir Magen, Head of Canada for Entain. "We understand this market and its customers. We design our product, offering, and customer experience with intention and on-the-ground knowledge. Entain's global scale, technology and industry-leading player protection capabilities allows us to deliver a premium experience tailored specifically for Albertans."

Alberta’s regulatory market launches with over 20 operators

Alberta is the second province in Canada to launch a regulated online gaming market, following the launch of the Ontario sports betting and Ontario online casinos markets in 2022.

The market launched July 13, and with it, 22 of the 50 registered operators went live from day one, including DraftKingsbet365, and Caesars.

According to comments by Alberta Red Tape Service Minister Dale Nally, the launch was intended to ensure no more potential revenue was lost to unregulated gaming, which Nally estimated accounted for 70% of online gaming in the province.

Under Alberta’s regulatory framework, operators and suppliers must first register with the AGLC before they can sign commercial agreements with the Alberta iGaming Commission, which will manage online gaming in the province. Alberta has also set a 20% tax on gross gaming revenue, with 2% going towards the First Nations and 1% to fund social responsibility initiatives.

Nally explained that the tax was intended to entice as many operators as possible to direct players away from unregulated sites. He compared Alberta’s market with New York, noting that the state launched with a 51% tax rate and only four operators compared to Alberta’s 22.

Estimates from Nally predict that tax revenue in the market’s first year of operation will reach $76 million, while analysts at Citizens JMP Securities say that gaming revenue could top $700 million each year.
