Everyone freaks out about the virus yet heart disease, diabetes and obesity will kill more people this year by far. No one cares. The hypocrisy about health and safety is sad.

I find the government restrictions, including the masks, to be far more horrifying than the virus and I live in North Jersey. The worst of it was here.

People expect my kids to wear masks when they go back to school. Half the kids can barely concentrate under ideal circumstances. You need to be able to interact with people, see their facial expressions. Seeing people is important as is emphasized by the fact that people act like complete animals to each other behind keyboards. It's like everyone is losing their minds.

People should be worried about taking care of their body and mind and being a positive influence on those around them. Work on their immune system. Instead you see so many people so concerned about who is wearing a mask, or violating social distancing, etc because they think it effects their safety. What affects their safety more is the emotional and mental strain they are putting themselves through just thinking about any of this BS.

And, even if someone not wearing a mask, or congregating, or running their business threatens you, do you not think that all of these measures ruining people's businesses does not affect their lives? Affect their health?

I just see so much hysteria, hypocrisy and complete nonsense. What are we going to do next year when the "worst flu ever" shows up? Shut down the world again? Or, we will have the vaccine, so we will all be fine

Listen CHUMP, so your making the mask a political thing. WTF is wrong with you.....If you don't want to wear one, be a fuking ass-hole and don't....Its been proven Virus particles float through the air....Good chance wearing a mask would stop those from coming in contact with your skin. Wearing no mask means the opposite....
I wear one out in public. I don't wear one when im driving or at home. I tend to walk away from ones that aren't wearing one...With asthma i need to cut my chances to a minimum...

You need to go to the diabetes, heart disease and obesity thread. This thread is about wearing a mask because of the covid19...Ever heard of it?

the virus is making a comeback because people are refusing to wear masks, not engaging in social distancing and ignoring the science. the crazies know better than the science. it makes a sane person weak in every joint.

Dr F just claimed it is very possible the USA will suffer another 100,000 deaths before the summer is over. obviously this is something pretty new even to science, however do you non scientists know more? does Trump exceed the science? how is that miracle drug working?

yes, I leave the house only for necessity and I wear a mask. I do not want to someday be in a hospital bed and my last words are "I can't breathe"

I find it amazing that the Trumpers who want everything open are anti-facemask. Makes no sense.

As of 2 weeks ago people on the South coast of England had pretty much given up wearing masks or gloves. About a week ago the UK government reversed its position on masks and it'll be mandatory on public transport. Since then public wearing of masks in shops seems to have gone back up from 1% to around 12%. I'm part of the 12%. Not judging, just passing on information.

And that "point" is utter nonsense. COVID-19 preventative measures are a constant in the news because it's easily spread to the population, and that spread is preventable. People are literally spreading death and illness by being careless, reckless, and ignorant

Comparing it to heart disease is dumb as shit and profoundly missing the entire point. Heart disease/diabetes/obesity etc. is dealt with on an individual, personal level. Some random fatass who's eating himself to death doesn't affect the rest of the population, he's only killing himself

You should probably care more about people who are being killed by their surroundings than people who are killing themselves (and maybe others). This is sort of one of the major points of the criminal justice system. Just try to apply it to other areas and, you know, have common sense

I didn't realize heart disease, diabetes and obesity are contagious. People like you are ones I hope get it, cause you're just an idiot and incapable of common sense. Face mask use is virtually universal in Taiwan, one of the countries least impacted by COVID-19 due to interventions. (Shown: Taipei street on May 18, 2020.)

We've all heard it many times: Wear a face covering — indoors, outdoors, on trains and buses. At work, in the supermarket and at church.
But now a new modeling study out of Cambridge and Greenwich universities suggests that face masks may be even more important than originally thought in preventing future outbreaks of the new coronavirus.
To ward off resurgences, the reproduction number for the virus (the average number of people who will contract it from one infected person) needs to drop below 1.0. Researchers don’t believe that’s achievable with lockdowns alone. However, a combination of lockdowns and widespread mask compliance might do the trick, they say.
“We show that, when face masks are used by the public all the time (not just from when symptoms first appear), the effective reproduction number, Re, can be decreased below 1, leading to the mitigation of epidemic spread,” the scientists wrote in the paper published Wednesday by the Proceedings of the Royal Society A.
                                              Related Stories

The modeling indicated that when lockdown periods are combined with 100% face mask use, disease spread is vastly diminished, preventing resurgence for 18 months, the time frame that has frequently been cited for developing a vaccine. It also demonstrated that if people wear masks in public, it is twice as effective at reducing the R number than if face coverings are only worn after symptoms appear.
The masks don’t have to be top-of-the-line surgical or respirator masks. Homemade coverings that catch only 50 percent of exhaled droplets would provide a “population-level benefit,” they concluded.
As has been well-publicized, wearing a mask primarily protects others from yourself, rather than the other way around. It is not a sign that you consider others a danger.
Science Focus quoted the study’s lead author, Dr Richard Stutt, as saying, “Our analyses support the immediate and universal adoption of face masks by the public.”
Stutt is part of a team that usually models the spread of crop diseases at Cambridge’s department of plant sciences.
Alameda County and San Francisco city health officials require residents to wear face coverings any time they leave home and get within 30 feet of anyone not living in their household.
In San Francisco, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, Santa Clara, San Mateo and Sonoma counties (plus the cities of Pleasant Hill and Fremont) people must use basic nonmedical, cloth masks, including scarves and bandannas, to cover their noses and mouths when they leave home to go to essential places like the supermarket, drugstore or docto

I'm not a viralogist, but I've heard otherwise. I.E. Sweden. No masks, no lockdowns. Back in school for kids a month ago or more. All wearing masks and locking down will do is make the virus linger around forever. It's not going to just "go away" because you stay in your house and/or wear that mask. You either have to let it run its course and get passed it (no mask, no lockdown like Sweden), or this thing will linger around for years and you won't be able to do smack. G.L.

You're right that wearing a mask won't make it "go away", it will just significantly slow the spread. Whether it lingers "forever" probably depends a lot on a vaccine. It's a different issue as to whether we should just "let er rip", but it should not be up for debate whether widespread mask usage helps to limit the spread. It clearly does.

Outside or inside? More important to wear indoors outside of home. I've never worn it while outdoors because I just keep a reasonable distance.

How about the people that are afraid of a virus that kills .000001% of people that get infected....how about they all stay at home the rest of their lives. No masks anywhere. Then, since the virus is so lethal.......the people "OUT" not wearing the masks will kill themselves "OFF". This way, when all is said and done..........get this.......you would die of starvation and they all die from the virus. Everyone dies. Now, that might just be the best solution I don't see mentioned here. LMFAO. Sort of kidding!
