The only thing it really has in common with the flu are the general symptoms. It has no vaccine, no treatment, is more contagious and we still don’t have a solid understanding of the basics like incubation period, how long it survives on surfaces, and whether it will mutate. While there is no need to panic, there is a definite need to take stronger cautionary measures than we do with the flu - especially to protect the older members of our community.

There is most certainly treatment available. It is not that unique, it’s a coronavirus which are pretty common. And treatment for viral illnesses are similar, supportive in nature. To say there is no treatment is inaccurate and misleading.

At the end of the day old patients with co-morbidities die of both, and young healthy people tend to survive. This virus is no different

I would be surprised if they don’t get it. I haven’t heard anything specific about that but I know my 4 year olds school has talked about shuttering for a week or two.

My guess is they’re just really healthy and show minimal symptoms but can still get it and transmit to others

Its way too early to say what the mortality rate is for it in the states where we have good healthcare. Remember the deaths in WA came out of a nursing home caring for elderly folks with conditions.

I know what it is, I’ve taken care of individuals on life support with the flu, SARS, as well as other viral cardiomyopathies.

The treatment is supportive in nature and includes IV fluids usually lots of them to support BP, IV drips such as Levophed, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Vasopressin, Milrinone, etc... to support heart function and blood pressure. Ventilators to support respiratory function, ventilation and oxygenation. Antibiotics to fight against any bacterial infections that result from a depressed immune system. Escalating care would include some sort of mechanical circulatory support such as a ballon pump, Impella or most likely, ecmo.

Yes, those are all treatments. And they’re the same treatments we use for someone critically ill that has the flu, or SARS, or any viral cardiomyopathy.

At the highest level of care, honestly its all the same.

The treatment for the vast, vast majority of patients will be to go home and get better.
