You'd think Americans would take some pride in being among the best paid workers in the developed world. But instead I see thread after thread arguing that $2.20/hr 3rd world level wages is just fine.

It makes me want to bang my head that so many can't see the benefits of a system that would see the lowest levels of society able to consume luxury goods and aspire to not be poor. Almost nobody needs to be truly poor in a rich country like America.

I don't believe they really expect to get $15 a hour. My belief is they are asking for so much to settle for what they truly want. Which is around $11. Inflation has skyrocketed while minimage wage has been pretty stagnant. It does need an increase but almost double is crazy.

USA has low minimum wages compared to other countries. Ceos and other executives make a disproportionate amount compared to workers. Other countries have a much smaller wage gap and better minimum wage.

Not sure about your area but where Im from fast food jobs are not filled by the "common man". They are generally filled by either teenagers (chic fil As in area have great model) or by the barely functional. I hire a few lower income employees but someone would probably have to pay me to employee most of the people working the local mcdonalds, burger kings, etc.

Sharpest post in this thread. If not FOR fast food and discount retail....what WOULD these employees be doing? There is a reason they work there and not at another skilled or labor intensive job. Plenty of other job options that don't require higher education but they DO require responsibility, skill, strong back and so forth.....oil fields pay $15/hr+ easy, heavy equipment operators, office work for the females such as real estate assistants....huge list. All of this we need to feel sorry that they show up and do the bare minimum required and get to be indoors and not out in the elements and not in danger such as a construction worker etc and they 'deserve' a raise to cover expenses that others who have put an effort together to cover past 25 years old is laughable. Heard a KFC worker on the news last week saying she's been in and out of the same location for 19 years..leaves and comes back...now makes $9.18/hr and her complaint was it was like slavery because when you are supposed to have a day off, and someone gets sick or quits, the manager calls her and has her cover the shift...she was pissed because she needs her free time for a social life so she quits...waits a week and comes back and starts again because she couldnt find employment elsewhere...now she's on the protest line.

Believe me, I know millionaires that don't do shit, and it does make me jealous, but they didn't get to that level by just being lucky. Risks were involved and sacrifices were made.

Shit's expensive here. No way around it. When you're paying close to $10 for a McDonald's meal regular size, there's something wrong. Yes people get paid more here so that's something to take into consideration but what about $50 for a lipstick that's $15 in the US? Or $48 for a $15 board game back home? It extends to every industry. Australia sucks for this shit and the only people who buy in stores now are those who are too stupid or desperate (like me at times) to sort it out overseas.
