The Lakers have won three of their last five games and are now just two games back of the 10th seed in the Western Conference. They will face a tall task when traveling to Brooklyn on Monday as they will be without both LeBron James and Anthony Davis. James has scored 40 or more in two of his last three games.

The Nets ended a two-game losing streak on Saturday when they took down the New York Knicks, 122-115. They will again be without Kevin Durant on Monday, and Ben Simmons is listed as questionable.

The Nets opened as 8.5-point favorites, and they are now favored to win by 9 at all the major sportsbooks except BetMGM, where they are listed at -9.5. Despite the number moving in favor of the Nets, the Lakers have received 60% of the support from bettors to this point.

As for the total, the number opened at 230.5, and there has been very little movement. Right now, the major sportsbooks are offering a number between 230 and 231. As of Monday morning, 58% of bettors are backing the Over.

LeBron James has been dominant since the calendar turned to 2023 and his absence is surely going to loom large for the Lakers on Monday night. The Lakers are coming off an overtime loss to the Boston Celtics, and the additional absence of Anthony Davis feels like another big blow to a team that is lacking depth. Yet, with so much working against the Lakers, oddsmakers kept this number in single digits.

A large reason for this is the Nets are also without their leading scorer in Kevin Durant. Since his injury, they are just 3-6. During their initial four games without Durant, they failed to score more than 112 points, including two games where they failed to score 100. Since then, the offense has started to click, but the defense has not. They have allowed at least 115 points in their last four games, going 2-2 during that stretch.

With all the headlines stating that AD and LeBron are out, oddsmakers could have easily made this line 10 or 11 points and they still would have gotten action on the Nets. But the truth is, the team that the Nets are putting out right now isn’t that much better than what the Lakers are fielding.

This spread should be closer to 6 or 7. And though this line is way too high, this is just a three-star bet in case the Lakers really can’t figure out how to get it together without LeBron.

BetMGM is the only sportsbook that has the Lakers listed as a greater than 9-point underdog. However, it is not worth taking the Lakers there because of the inflated price they are offering. Instead, it is better to bet at one of the other four books that are showing this line at +9 for a price of -110.

Most of the action has come in on the Lakers, yet the line has still moved in direction of the Nets. It shouldn’t be long before this number starts to drop, maybe even falling below an 8-point spread before tipoff.
