The Texas Rangers are still alive in the wild-card hunt, but they'll need to stay in the playoff mix without top hurler Tyler Mahle for an extended period.

Mahle is dealing with a rotator cuff strain and hasn't pitched since June 10. Rangers fans and fantasy baseball managers are now wondering when Mahle will return and be back on the bump. Below, we'll dish out an injury update and deliver a potential return date based on all of the latest information.

🚑 When will Tyler Mahle return and be back with Rangers?

Mahle was originally diagnosed with shoulder fatigue, but recent MRIs revealed the injury was in fact a right rotator cuff strain.

“We’re going to pump the brakes on him,” Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young said on June 30, via Kennedi Landry of MLB.com. “He’s going to be in a holding pattern in terms of recovery time and making sure that we get him 100% right.

"He’s going to go a few more weeks without throwing before we can begin a throwing program. It’s nothing that I think they’re concerned about from the long term, but he just needs some time down. I know it’s a heartbreak for Tyler, but we gotta make sure we get it right for him.”

Mahle, who has been seen as a potential trade chip for the Rangers, will most certainly still be on the shelf through the July 31 MLB trade deadline. The Rangers could still trade Mahle despite his IL status, as MLB teams are allowed to make swaps that include injured players.

Mid-to-late August seems to be a likely return time for Mahle. Here's a look at the Rangers’ schedule around that time, assuming he is still on the club.

  • Sunday, Aug. 17: Texas Rangers at Toronto Blue Jays
  • Monday, Aug. 18: Texas Rangers at Kansas City Royals
  • Tuesday, Aug. 19: Texas Rangers at Kansas City Royals
  • Wednesday, Aug. 20: Texas Rangers at Kansas City Royals
  • Thursday, Aug. 21: Texas Rangers at Kansas City Royals
  • Friday, Aug. 22: Cleveland Guardians at Texas Rangers

⏳ How long will Tyler Mahle be out for?

Based on how long other MLB pitchers have been out with this injury, we can project that Mahle will be sidelined for somewhere in the neighborhood of 55-to-70 days.

Mahle has already been out for 28 days. The 55-day mark from when he last pitched for the Rangers would be Aug. 5. So early August would likely be the best-cast scenario. The 70-day mark would be Aug. 20.

Kansas City Royals pitcher Cole Ragans also suffered a rotator cuff strain this season. He hasn't pitched since June 5, but Ragans expected to begin throwing this week. If Mahle is on a similar timeline, expect him to start a throwing program during the MLB All-Star break.
