Two NL Central rivals heading in opposite directions do battle in the fourth game of a four-game series, as the St. Louis Cardinals host the Chicago Cubs at Busch Stadium. My Cubs vs. Cardinals prediction backs the home favorites to earn a series split, as they should have a much more disciplined approach against Javier Assad.

But I’m also expecting a Cubs slugger to go deep and continue a red-hot month at the plate.

First pitch is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. ET (ESPN Unlimited), and Imanaga is opposed by Andre Pallante. The Cardinals are -120 betting favorites.

🏆 Who will win Cubs vs. Cardinals?

Andre Pallante is coming off his best start of the season, and I’m expecting further positive regression while he leads the Cardinals to a win in the series finale.

Score prediction: Cardinals 5, Cubs 4

💰 Cubs vs. Cardinals prediction & best bet

Cardinals ML (-120)

Andre Pallante is coming off his first start of seven-plus scoreless innings pitched since July 2025, which followed a four-start stretch where he pitched to a 5.56 ERA. But that span also included him throwing 5.2 scoreless innings against the Cubs in a 17-1 rout, as he limited the damage with 11 ground balls.

St. Louis entered yesterday 3-9 since the All-Star Break, and had the second-worst record in the Majors since July 5 (6-15). But the Cardinals should also see a lot of the Cubs bullpen, and their relievers have the fifth-worst xERA.

📡 SBR Edge: Back to .500?

When St. Louis lost on Tuesday to drop its record to 53-54, that marked the first time it had a losing record all season.

🔥 Best Cubs vs. Cardinals player prop bet

Javier Assad Under 15.5 outs recorded (-161)

Javier Assad has assumed a unique bullpen/long reliever role for the Cubs in his last two appearances. That not only made the news surprising that he was replacing Shota Imanaga for this start, but raises down that he will be able to take on a pitch count of 80-plus pitches like he did in his first two July outings.

Assad has only worked four innings and thrown 58 total pitches since July 11. In his first July outing, he held St. Louis scoreless over 4 2/3 innings. But his pitch count ramped up to 80 quickly because of his inability to put batters away, as he finished with just two hits allowed but also just two strikeouts.

In his career, Assad allows a .310/.380/.490 slash line and a 5.40 ERA (his worst in any inning) in the sixth innings of games. I expect an analytically-driven Cubs coaching staff to be cognizant of that, and remove him after five innings no matter how he has performed to that point.

💣 Cubs vs. Cardinals home run prediction

Seiya Suzuki to hit a home run (+650)

Seiya Suzuki is tearing the cover off the ball this month, logging 13 extra-base hits with 21 runs batted in over 22 games. Suzuki is homer-less in 12 career at-bats against Pallante, but two of his six hits have gone for extra bases, adding to an impressive 1.238 OPS (the highest of any Cubs batter who has 10-plus at-bats against the righty).

Pallate has allowed a home run and a .325 OBA in two starts against the Cubs, and the Cardinals bullpen ranks in the bottom half of the league in fly ball rate over its recent poor 21-game stretch.

Suzuki has homered at least once in five of the last eight series, so I’m banking on him adding to that streak this afternoon.

🚀 Cubs vs. Cardinals same-game parlay

I respect Seiya Suzuki's .500 batting average in a decent sample size against Pallante enough to not leave him completely out of this same-game parlay, even if I expect the Cardinals to pull the upset. But instead of backing him to hit a home run, I am swapping that for a more conservative third leg for him to record at least one base hit, which he has done in 15 of the last 17 games. If St. Louis is to win, I expect it to score more than its season average, leading to a short outing from Assad.

💵 Cubs vs. Cardinals SGP picks

  • Cardinals ML (-123)
  • Javier Assad Under 15.5 outs recorded (-161)
  • Seiya Suzuki to record 1+ hits (-238)

💡 How I'm betting Cubs vs. Cardinals: MLB strategy

Follow all of our MLB analysis and expert predictions for baseball season.

I was going to back the Cardinals either way this afternoon even if it had faced Imanaga like planned, given its 19-14 record against left-handed starting pitchers. I'm still happy to wager on St. Louis, even if Chicago's pitching change meant shorter odds for the Cardinals in the favorite role.

I was tempted to play the alternate line on Assad's outs recorded at Under 14.5, with the best odds for that being +130 (carrying a 43.48% implied probability) at bet365. But since I am down over five units with my MLB picks for the week, I decided to go the more conservative route and lay the heavier juice with the Under at 15.5.

📊 Live Cubs vs. Cardinals odds

With the news that the Cubs were switching their pitching plans from Imanaga to Assad, the line jumped the fence at the best MLB betting sites, with St. Louis going from +110 underdogs to as high as -127 moneyline (55.95% implied odds) at bet365. Despite the pitching change, Chicago still remains a popular play, attracting 53% of the early wagers.

The pitching change had a similar effect on the total at the best sports betting sites, which opened at 7.5 and is now at an O/U of 8.5 across the market. Early betting splits are 58/42 in favor of the Over, which supports the -114 juice to that side of the total at FanDuel.
