There was discussion not long ago about how to approach the Rafael Devers saga, from a betting perspective and otherwise.
The approach from Devers himself recently has been simple: bludgeon baseballs.
A tough early stretch to begin the season after becoming Boston's full-time designated hitter is now a mere speck in the rearview. Devers produced a woeful .225/.354/.433 slash line during March and April, and that's skyrocketed to .375/.486/.670 in May as the end of the month nears. His OPS has surged too, blasting upward from .787 to 1.156.
Devers has also clubbed seven home runs in May, with five days still to go. He's nearly matched his highest single-month total from last year (eight in June).
The veteran is back to being the power-packed lefty we've all come to know, with his Baseball Savant page that's a sea of red, and a 94.8-mph average exit velocity and 58.9 hard-hit rate standing out the most while both sitting in the top 1% of MLB.
Devers is also unsurprisingly terrorizing righties, like the one he'll face today in the Milwaukee Brewers' Aaron Civale. His OPS jumps from .860 against lefties to .986 when facing a righty, and he's smacked 10 of his 12 home runs off right-handers.
Civale was regularly tattooed last year while giving up 29 home runs, tied for the seventh-most leaguewide. And he could be even more susceptible to the long ball tonight while not fully polished and making just his second start after an IL stint.
When he exits, a Brewers' bullpen that sits 24th in MLB with a 4.71 ERA takes over.
