Sungjae Im and Hideki Matsuyama share the status of favorites as we make our Wyndham Championship picks based on the odds from our best golf betting sites as the PGA Tour's regular season comes to a close this week.

A relatively strong field is in attendance at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, NC this week for the 2022-23 PGA Tour regular-season finale. We'll have a new winner of the Wyndham Championship after 2022 champion Tom Kim withdrew from the field last week.

Sungjae Im and Hideki Matsuyama are billed as betting favorites by the odds from our best sports betting apps. Sam Burns is the top-ranked golfer in the Wyndham Championship field, at No. 20 in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR).

Here's our look at the best Wyndham Championship picks for Sedgefield Country Club.

Wyndham Championship picks

Brendon Todd to be first-round leader (+6000)

Todd sparked my interest when perusing the key stats for this week but rather than back him for his first PGA Tour win since 2019, I'm going to take advantage of his 7:23 a.m. ET tee time and the elevated odds with this first-round leader bet. We're getting consensus +6000 odds for Todd to hold the 18-hole lead, while he's priced around +5500 to win the tournament.

Todd is a short and accurate hitter off the tee with a top-10 finish in this event in 2021. He also has excellent iron play from tee to green.

Aaron Rai to win (+4000)

Rai is coming off a T-20 finish in the 3M Open in which he ranked among the field leaders in driving accuracy while gaining 0.92 strokes per round from tee to green. Those two areas, plus his approach game, have been consistent strengths over his last 24 measured rounds. He's also 13th on the PGA Tour in proximity to the pin on approaches from this week's key distance of 150-175 yards.

The Englishman enters the week at No. 90 in the OWGR with two top-10 finishes in his last four starts in the U.S. Rai enters this week 61st in the FedEx Cup standings and can solidify his playoff positioning with a strong showing in this top-heavy field.

We're not getting any outlier prices in Rai's Wyndham Championship odds other than the market-low of +3000 from Caesars, but this consensus +4000 ticket presents plenty of value for a golfer who finally showed some positive regression with his putter last week.

Alex Smalley to win (+4500 via FanDuel, PointsBet)

The last three PGA Tour winners on American soil have been first-time victors. Like Rai, Smalley will hope to extend that trend ahead of the FedEx Cup Playoffs beginning next week.

This isn't just a regular betting trend. This is a regular theme during this stretch of the PGA Tour's schedule. Star players tailor their schedules around the final major of the year and then prepare for the FEC Playoffs, often outside of the regular PGA Tour circuit. This opens the door for first-time winners in these "lesser" events. Vincent Norrman, Akshay Bhatia, and Lee Hodges have capitalized on that.

Enter, Alex Smalley. The 26-year-old enters the week at No. 68 in the OWGR with a T-2 finish in the John Deere Classic and a T-9 in the Travelers Championship, with the latter being against an elevated PGA Tour field.

With Sedgefield Country Club being a similarly petite venue, Smalley will be able to lean on his accuracy off the tee without being punished for his relative lack of distance. He's also seventh on the PGA Tour in proximity from 150-175 yards this season, and he has finishes of T-29 and T-13 in two appearances in this event. We're hoping his familiarity with these greens can reignite his cold putter.
