FedEx St. Jude Championship picks

Collin Morikawa (+2200)

Morikawa is making his fourth career appearance in the FedEx St. Jude Championship off of a T-5 result last year. The two-time major champion enters the week at No. 22 in the OWGR and No. 22 in the FEC standings but shares the consensus seventh-best odds to win this week.

An excellent iron player who has shown some improved play with his volatile putter of late, Morikawa ranks second on the PGA Tour in birdie-or-better percentage from this week's key distance of 150-175 yards. He excelled on these Bermuda greens last year and ranked among the field leaders in driving accuracy. He'll need to rely on those traits once again.

Morikawa missed the cut in the British Open but tied for second (against a much weaker field) in the Rocket Mortgage Classic as his last event in the U.S.

We originally recommended Morikawa at +2500 via BetMGM  on Tuesday but his odds dropped to the near-consensus +2200 as of Wednesday morning. I'm still fine backing him down to +2000.

Matt Kuchar to finish top 30 (+175 via FanDuel)

Kuchar shares the lead in this field with 24 career rounds played at TPC Southwind and is back in this event for the second straight year after not making it to the playoffs in 2021. He'll hope to improve on last year's missed cut while trying to get inside the top 50 of the FEC standings in order to advance to next week's BMW Championship.

A top 30 finish this week may not be enough to guarantee that jump, but it's the market I like most for Kuchar this week. FanDuel's offering the best price of +175 with DraftKings at +165 and bet365 offering the low odds of +140.

Kuchar has been struggling with his irons and putter of late, but he remains very accurate off the tee and has retained a sharp short game. He's seventh on the PGA Tour in bogey avoidance this season and an adequate 43rd in birdie-or-better percentage from 150-175 yards.

Sepp Straka (+128 via FanDuel) vs. Cameron Young tournament matchup

Only FanDuel and DraftKings are offering this exact tournament matchup. FanDuel has our preferred price point of +128 with DraftKings pricing the reigning tournament runner-up as a +115 underdog vs. Young (-140).

Straka holds the advantage over Young in terms of his current form with his putter, approach game, and driving accuracy, and he ranked second in last year's field with 1.50 strokes gained: putting per round.

FedEx St. Jude Championship field notes

The top-70 golfers in the FedEx Cup rankings following last week's Wyndham Championship have advanced to the FedEx St. Jude Championship field. The top-50 golfers after this week will move on to next week's BMW Championship as the second playoff event with the top-30 in the standings then advancing to the 2023 Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club.

Justin Thomas is the most notable name who fell short of his playoff bid with a T-12 finish in the Wyndham Championship leaving him outside of the top-70 in the season-long points race. He joins the injured Zalatoris on the sidelines this week. Sepp Straka, the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship runner-up, is offered with odds as high as +6000 via bet365 this week.
