In what has been some of the most drastic line movement we’ve seen all season in college football, the Washington Huskies are now favored to avenge their national championship game loss to the Michigan Wolverines after originally opening as 8.5-point underdogs.

Our Michigan vs. Washington prediction leans into there being a method to the madness when it comes to movement like this as part of our Big Ten predictions for this week.

We like the Huskies to get their consolation prize after last year’s natty defeat against a Big Ten championship odds contender.

Michigan vs. Washington against the spread prediction: Week 6

Washington to cover the spread: -1.5 (-108) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Michigan vs. Washington opening odds:

  • Michigan: -8.5 (-110)
  • Washington: +8.5 (-110)

Michigan’s adjusted offensive efficiency (84th in FBS) has been lagging significantly as the Wolverines struggle to effectively replace J.J. McCarthy at quarterback.

Alex Orji has been the most recent candidate to fill the role, but he’s been a complete zero when throwing the football. Orji has racked up just 118 passing yards over his two starts.

If Wolverines can’t run, they can’t win

The problem as Michigan encounters this road environment then could be the one-dimensional nature of the Wolverines' offense. Washington ranks 34th nationally in run defense, allowing just 113.5 rushing yards per game. If the Huskies stick to their standard stout run defense, Michigan could struggle to move the ball.

Reports on the Michigan side are also noting the possibility that offensive line attrition could impact this outcome, contributing to what could be a bleak day offensively for the Wolverines. That’s especially true considering Michigan hasn’t yet played a road game, while Washington is 2-1 against the spread at home this season.

With the Huskies at -1.5 across our best sportsbooks, target the -108 odds at FanDuel and DraftKings for this spread bet.

Kalel Mullings Under 103.5 rushing yards (-114) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Although Michigan boasts one of the strongest rushing attacks in the country, that production has all come at home. With offensive line injuries possibly impacting the Wolverines, running the ball won’t be a guarantee against a solid run defense.

Huskies can sell out to stop the run

The Huskies rank 39th in FBS in adjusted defensive efficiency and boast a good enough pass defense (seventh nationally in passing yards allowed per game) to virtually count that aspect of the game as a given.

Considering the severe limitations of Michigan’s passing attack under Orji, Washington’s defensive game plan should revolve entirely around stuffing the run.

Kalel Mullings is the primary ball-carrier for the Wolverines, but he splits work with Donovan Edwards. Orji mixes into the run game, too, so a triple-digit rushing line for Mullings feels lofty. Caesars and bet365 list the line at 100.5 rushing yards.

FanDuel and BetMGM offer an even more favorable line for Under bettors at 103.5 yards, with FanDuels’ -114 odds leading the way on value.
